James Earl Jones passes away at 93: Lesser known facts of Hollywood's legendary actor

Legendary actor James Earl Jones, the voice behind one of cinema's most iconic villains, Darth Vader, passed away this morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York. He was 93 years old. Jones, who had an illustrious career spanning over six decades, was beloved for his powerful voice and commanding presence on stage and screen.

Mark Hamill, his 'Star Wars' co-star, shared the sad news on Instagram, writing, “One of the world's finest actors whose contributions to Star Wars were immeasurable. He'll be greatly missed. #RIP dad."

Here are some lesser known facts about the Hollywood legend...

Early Life: A Tough Beginning

James Earl Jones was born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi, in a modest shack lit by an oil lamp. His father, Robert Earl Jones, left the family before his birth to pursue a career as a boxer and later, an actor. Jones was raised by his maternal grandparents in Manistee, Michigan, where he struggled with a severe stutter that left him nearly mute for years.

He eventually overcame his speech impediment with the help of a compassionate teacher, Donald Crouch, who encouraged him to read poetry aloud. This challenge awakened his love for language, leading him to find his voice—both literally and metaphorically.

Early Career: From Humble Beginnings to Stardom

Jones initially set out to become a doctor but switched to drama while attending the University of Michigan after failing a pre-med exam. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he moved to New York and studied acting under the American Theater Wing program while working odd jobs with his father.

In 1970, his breakout role came with 'The Great White Hope', a Pulitzer Prize-winning play about Jack Johnson, the first Black heavyweight boxing champion. Jones received an Academy Award nomination for reprising the role in the film adaptation, solidifying his place as one of the most talented actors of his generation.

The Accolades: A True EGOT Winner

Throughout his career, Jones earned the coveted EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar (an honorary one), and Tony Award. He won two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Daytime Emmy, a Grammy for spoken word performance in 1977, and three Tony Awards for his work on Broadway.

Despite his accolades, Jones was known for his humble, relentless work ethic. In 2015, at the age of 84, he came to rehearsals for a Broadway run of 'The Gin Game' having already memorized the entire script.

Memorable Roles: From Screen to Voice

Jones delivered many unforgettable performances, including his role as a reclusive writer in 'Field of Dreams', boxer Jack Johnson in 'The Great White Hope', and Alex Haley in 'Roots: The Next Generation'. He also portrayed dignified characters such as Mufasa in both 'The Lion King' movies (1994 and 2019).

Star Wars: The Voice That Defined Darth Vader

Though Orson Welles was initially considered for the voice of Darth Vader, 'Star Wars' creator George Lucas ultimately chose Jones for his distinctive, commanding tone. His line “No, I am your father” from 'The Empire Strikes Back' became one of the most famous and often misquoted lines in cinema history.

7/9

Father and Son: A Legacy in Film

Jones followed in his father’s footsteps, as Robert Earl Jones was also an actor. Robert appeared in films like 'The Cotton Club' and 'The Sting'. Their shared journey in film added another layer to the family’s artistic legacy, one that James Earl Jones carried forward with grace.

Primal Therapy and Personal Growth

In the 1970s, Jones explored primal therapy, a method that involves reliving childhood traumas to release repressed emotions. He once famously remarked that the therapy cured his smoking habit, sinus trouble, and even haemorrhoids. Though he later admitted these claims were exaggerated, the therapy marked a significant chapter in his personal life.

The Final Bow

James Earl Jones leaves behind a towering legacy of unparalleled talent and timeless roles. His voice will continue to resonate for generations, forever imprinted in cinematic history. As Samuel L. Jackson once said, “If you were an actor or aspired to be an actor... one of the standards we always had was to be a James Earl Jones.”
