Steven Spielberg’s wrong text to Josh O’Connor becomes creative breakthrough moment on 'Disclosure' day set
Filmmaker Steven Spielberg accidentally sent a text message meant for his wife Kate Capshaw to actor Josh O'Connor during the filming of his upcoming movie 'Disclosure Day', an incident that unexpectedly helped shape a key scene in the project, according to People.
O'Connor, who stars in the sci-fi film releasing on June 12, shared the anecdote in an interview, calling it "the greatest Steven Spielberg story."
Describing the moment, O'Connor said he was struggling with an emotional scene while preparing in his hotel room when Spielberg sent him a late-night message, according to People.
"I was halfway through the shoot and we had a scene coming up, which is quite an emotional scene and I was struggling with it," O'Connor said. "And then I got a text from him quite late at night, just saying, 'The door is on the latch, just push,'" according to People.
The actor said the message helped him understand the emotional arc of the scene. "It made so much sense. I was like, 'Of course.' ... I was so thrilled with that note and I came in the next day and said, 'Steven, you totally unlocked it for me.'"
However, Spielberg later clarified that the message was not intended for him. "He was like, 'What are you talking about?'" O'Connor recalled. "It turns out that text was supposed to be for his wife," according to People.
The filmmaker has been married to Kate Capshaw since 1991. The couple shares four children and is known for their long-standing partnership in Hollywood.
Despite the mix-up, O'Connor said the moment became a light-hearted memory on set. "It became a very big joke for all of us. But it did unlock the scene for me, so, fair play," he added, according to People.
'Disclosure Day' features an ensemble cast including Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo. The film follows O'Connor's character, a cybersecurity expert with a mysterious connection to Blunt's role, as they uncover signs of alien life on Earth.
