Time and again the issue of equal rights for gays has been raised on several platforms but even today societal acceptance of gay men and women is not so easy to come by.
Homosexuality has always been a touchy subject until well-known faces such as these came out of the closet and talked about gay rights and their own sexual orientation.
Nevertheless, celebrities are ambassadors of change and they have brought about a very optimistic revolutionary transformation in the attitude of the general public towards gays. They are not only cherished for their talent and contribution to the entertainment industry worldwide but are also respected for their individuality.

Cynthia Nixon

The 'Sex and the City' star who came out of the closet in 2004 has always been upright about her sexual orientation. The actress has clarified in several interviews how being gay is a choice for her.
Regarding her sexual orientation, Nixon remarked in 2007, "I don't really feel I've changed. I'd been with men all my life, and I'd never fallen in love with a woman. But when I did, it didn't seem so strange. I'm just a woman in love with another woman."
She identified herself as bisexual in 2012. Nixon has taken a public stand supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage. Cynthia is currently married to education activist Christine Marinoni.

Ellen Page

The 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' actress first came out in a moving and a deeply personal speech delivered at a conference to promote the welfare of LGBT youth. The actress accepted that she came out of the closet because maybe she could make a difference, to help others have an easier and more hopeful time. She also added how she's tired of hiding and lying by omission.
Page proudly and defiantly declared how she has suffered for years because she was scared to be out but is proud that she could do so.
Everyone in the Hollywood industry appreciated Ellen's speech, with 'House of Cards' actress Kate Mara even asking Ellen to be her valentine.

Sam Smith

The 'Lay me down' singer revealed to the public that he is gay in May 2014. He acknowledged a relationship—since ended—with actor and model Jonathan Zeizel. The British singer also said, "I’m a gay man who came out when I was 10 years-old, and there’s nothing in my life that I’m prouder of."

Elton John

English Singer/composer Sir Elton John, who married German recording engineer Renate Blauel with speculation that the marriage was a cover for his homosexuality finally John came out as bisexual in an interview in 1976, he told the magazine that he was comfortable being gay.
Elton John married David Furnish in 2014. The couple was in a British Civil Partnership for eight years and married after same-sex marriage was legalized in Britain.

Ellen Degeneres

American comedian, television host and actress, Ellen Degeneres came out on the Oprah Winfrey Show back in February 1997, and her character on her popular sitcom, Ellen, came out to her therapist the following April thus becoming became the first leading character on a TV series to be openly gay as well as coming out to the general public.
The actress accepted how it was scary to finally embrace herself it also made her feel ashamed that she was hiding something and couldn’t feel honest and really be who she is. In August 2008, DeGeneres tied the knot with girlfriend Portia de Rossi and is happily married still.

British pop star George Michael revealed to the world that he is gay during an interview after he was arrested for allegedly engaging in a lewd act. While the Pop star accepted that he felt stupid and reckless and weak for letting himself be exposed that way but he didn't feel shame about his sexuality. Over the years, George Michael was involved in many relationships, but he was not married when he died.
