Austrian man gets 15 years in jail for planning an attack at Taylor Swift’s Vienna concert
Reuters reported that recently, the man who has been identified as Beran A. was sentenced to spend 15 years in jail, after he was found guilty of planning a terrorist attack on Swift’s concert in 2024. His last name has not been revealed to the public in accordance with the Austrian privacy rules. As per the reports, the man admitted to his crimes at the trial hearing, which was held last month.
During the final hearing of the case, Beran expressed his remorse over the matter and closed his remarks by saying, “I would just like to say that I am sorry”. It was reported that he had made attempts to illegally buy things such as a machine gun and hand grenades, but had failed. He had also followed a terror instruction video to make a bomb at home.
He, along with two others were all accused of plotting to carry out bombings in different Middle Eastern states.
Beran and co-defendant Arda K, both admitted in court that while they travelled to Dubai and Istanbul for the attacks, they were never carried out by them.
At the trial, he admitted that while he had been looking for people to raget, he ended up having a panic attack and backed out from the plan. His return to Vienna prompted him to choose the concert as his attack location. Along with Beran A., Adra K, was also sentenced and found guilty in court. He will be serving 12 years in prison.
More background about the case
Back in 2024, when Taylor Swift was set to start her Vienna leg, it was reported that Beran A. was taken in by authorities only a day before the concert was supposed to be held. He was arrested on grounds of suspicious activity on August 7, 2024.
Following his arrest, all three dates that had been planned in Vienna for the ‘Opalite’ singer’s tour were cancelled because of safety and security reasons. At the time, CNN had reported that the US authorities had issued a warning to the Austrian authorities about a possible threat. Three teenagers were questioned in relation to the case, and a lot of things used for a terror attack were found at the accused’s premises. A statement from the old report read, “Investigators unearthed a stockpile of chemicals, explosive devices, detonators and 21,000 euros in counterfeit cash at the home of the main suspect, a 19-year-old ISIS sympathizer who had been radicalized online, according to authorities.”
The head of the domestic intelligence agency, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, had cited that the individual, who had not been publicly identified at the time, had been planning a suicide bombing. In his statement, he also added that “He said he intended to carry out an attack using explosives and knives. His aim was to kill himself and a large number of people during the concert, either today or tomorrow.”
At the time, fans had also been expecting for future shows to be cancelled. However, London Mayor Sadiq Khan stated that they would not be cancelling the singer’s concerts following the arrest. He stated to Sky News that “I’m sure Vienna has got its own reasons to cancel the Taylor Swift concerts, we’re going to carry on, working closely with police (and) ensuring that the Taylor Swift concerts can take place in London safely.”
Swift had also addressed the Vienna incident at the time, taking to her social media 2 weeks later to talk about the devastating issue. She wrote, “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”
