‘It felt so good’: Hilary Duff details ‘drag-out fight’ with husband Matthew Koma, and throwing his phone in a bush
Hilary Duff counts her blessings for her husband and their family with kids, but she doesn’t shy away from sharing the messier moments of marriage. Recently, Hilary got real about the one big argument she and her husband, Matthew Koma, seem to have every year. She laughed as she described the time she tossed his phone straight into a Bougainvillea bush, and honestly, she admits it felt amazing.

What happened?

In a recent chat with Dakota Fanning for Interview Magazine, Hilary opened up about an annual ‘drag-out fight’ she had with her husband, Matthew Koma.

For the unversed, Hilary and Matthew have been married since December 2019, and she says they almost never argue, except for one ‘drag-out fight’ once a year. Hilary even revealed that Matthew joked about it recently, telling her, “We haven’t had a fight in such a long time.”“He actually brought it up the other day,” Hilary shared with friend Dakota Fanning. In her words, “He was like, ‘We haven’t had a fight in such a long time.’ I’m like, ‘Are you ready?’"However, she admitted that when it comes down to it, she’s usually the one who isn’t ready for another round. The ‘So yesterday’ singer shared that the last time they had their big fight, she “threw his phone in a Bougainvillea bush,” adding, “It felt so good.”
But Hilary’s outburst wasn’t without any reason or context. She revealed that the Los Angeles fires in 2025 forced them out of their home, turning life upside down for them and their kids, Banks, 7, Mae, 4, Townes, nearly 2, and Luca, 13, Hilary’s son from her first marriage to Mike Comrie. “We just needed to have it out,” she said. “But we don’t usually fight.”For all the drama, Hilary and Matthew are a solid team. They work together at home and in the studio, as Matthew produced her latest album, ‘Luck… or Something’. Hilary says having him in her corner makes all the difference. “It sounds cheesy, but taking on the world together, we’re such a unit,” she said. “I grew up feeling like I had to do everything alone. It took me a long time to accept how much he could actually help.”Hilary also revealed that it helps that Matthew’s “insanely talented,” too. Hilary decided she only wanted to work with him on the album. “It had to just be me and you,” she told him. “The most honest stuff came out of that because he knows everything about me — the hard times, the good times, all of it.”
