Rio Mayor threatens to ‘ban’ Chappell Roan after her alleged incident with soccer star Jorginho’s daughter
Pop star Chappell Roan is in the middle of a global firestorm after an alleged run-in with the 11-year-old daughter of footballer Jorginho. What started as a quick encounter in a Brazilian hotel has exploded, and now even politicians are weighing in. The mayor of Rio de Janeiro has jumped in with a pretty bold statement of his own.

Is Chappell Roan facing ‘ban’ from Rio?

Eduardo Cavaliere, Rio’s mayor, recently got involved in the Chappell Roan controversy after soccer star Jorginho accused the ‘Pink Pony Club’ singer of making her daughter cry, accusing her of “harassment” and “disrespect.”On an X (formerly, Twitter) post, Cavaliere said Roan isn’t welcome at the city’s big ‘Todo Mundo no Rio’ beach concert as long as he’s in charge: “I want to say that as long as I'm in charge of our city - this girl @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio!” On the flip side, the mayor invited Jorginho’s daughter to the event at Copacabana Beach, where Shakira will headline, adding, “I doubt Shakira @shakira @Shakira_Brasil would do that! Besides, @FrelloJorginho your little one is already a guest of honor of the organization in May!”

Chappell Roan’s fan interaction went wrong: What happened?

Per People, it all started in São Paulo, where Roan was performing at Lollapalooza Brasil. Jorginho said his wife and daughter were staying at the same hotel as Roan. According to him, his daughter, who’s a fan, just walked by Roan’s table at breakfast, smiled, and sat back down. “By coincidence, they're staying at the same hotel as this artist. During breakfast, the artist walked past their table. My daughter, like any child, recognised her, got excited, and just wanted to make sure it was really her,” Jorginho wrote of the alleged interaction.
No photos, no conversation, nothing. “She simply walked past the singer's table, looked to confirm it was her, smiled, and went back to sit with her mum. She didn't say anything, didn't ask for anything,” Jorginho wrote. But then things got messy. Jorginho claims someone from Roan’s security team came over, acting aggressively and even accusing his daughter of “harassment” and “disrespect.” In Jorginho’s words, “a large security guard came over to their table while they were still having breakfast and began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter, saying that she shouldn't allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people.“Honestly, I don't know at what point simply walking past a table and looking to see if someone is there can be considered harassment,” the soccer pro continued, alleging that the security guard “even said he would file a complaint against them with the hotel, while my 11-year-old daughter was sitting there in tears.”“My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot,” he added.Jorginho didn’t hold back. In his Instagram post, he called the response way over the top and pointed out his daughter hadn’t done anything wrong. He said, “No one should have to go through this, especially not a child,” and reminded everyone that fans are the reason artists succeed. To make things even more heated, Roan thanked her security team on stage at Lollapalooza right after the story broke, without mentioning the incident itself. Some people saw this as out of touch, though it’s hard to say if she even knew about the accusations at that point.

Who is Chappell Roan?

Kayleigh Rose Amstutz from Missouri, also known as Chappell Roan, has become a standout in pop music thanks to her bold, drag-inspired style and an unapologetically queer identity. She started out sharing music online, then got signed to Atlantic Records. Her mix of synth-pop and alternative pop, plus her powerful vocals, got her noticed.Chappell Roan really broke through with her song ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, which took off everywhere. By 2024–2025, she’d opened for Olivia Rodrigo, won Best New Artist at the Grammys, and climbed the Billboard charts.Roan’s known for speaking her mind, especially when it comes to artist rights, LGBTQ+ issues, and setting firm boundaries with fans. She’s said before that being a fan doesn’t mean you get unlimited access. Notably, it’s not the first time she’s called out fan behavior, either. Just a few weeks ago, she criticized paparazzi and fans who waited outside restaurants, calling it harassment.
