They marked the day with a skit dedicated to farmers
Kicking off festivities for Elaan, an intercollegiate youth festival organised by Nirmala Memorial Foundation College, the students decided to present a skit highlighting the role of the real Indian hero, the Farmer which falls on

December 23 - The National Farmer's Day in India

. They performed the skit at D'monte park

Bandra

and at Bandra station. They say it was to create awareness in support of

farmers

and encourage citizens to consume

organic food

.

Supporting them were there professors. Prof Mona Punjabi said, "Though we are an agrarian nation, not enough has been done to improve the conditions of our farmers. Many of them continue to survive in dire straits and the unpredictability of the Indian monsoon does more harm than good for them." Adds Dr. Megha Juvekar "While they toil hard to give us our daily dose of nutrition, many of them cannot even afford the basic amentities of life." Agrees Dr Poonam Kakkad "That's why we decided that it was high time we did some thing for the real heros of India - Our Farmers!"

The students also promoted the Farmers Market, that takes place at Demello Park, Bandra every Sunday. This market supports farmers to sell their green grocery with farmers from all over Maharashtra coming there every Sunday with the fresh farm produce and reach out the consumers.
