Shuvaprasanna captures Chaplin’s timeless spirit in “A Genius & The Common Man”
The new year began on a reflective note for Kolkata’s art lovers as artist Shuvaprasanna unveiled his latest solo exhibition, “A Genius & The Common Man,” in collaboration with the Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC). The exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of filmmaker Goutam Ghose, actor June Malia, and renowned Manipuri dancer Priti Patel, marking a fitting cultural opening to 2026.
Inspired by the enduring genius of Charlie Chaplin, the show delves into the many shades of the legendary performer — the laughter, the loneliness, and the gentle defiance that defined his art. Shuvaprasanna reimagines Chaplin not merely as a cinematic icon but as the eternal everyman — vulnerable, resilient, and profoundly human.
Executed in liquid acrylic on canvas, the works brim with movement and texture, capturing the rhythm of Chaplin’s screen presence. Each brushstroke reflects the tension between humour and heartbreak, mirroring the universal emotions that made Chaplin beloved across generations.
“Chaplin’s humour never felt cheap, and his sadness never felt distant,” shared Shuvaprasanna. “Even today, his work feels startlingly alive and I wanted to explore that timeless duality on canvas.”
Through “A Genius & The Common Man,” the artist invites viewers to rediscover Chaplin’s philosophy — that laughter can be resistance, and simplicity, a form of truth.
The exhibition is open to the public from January 2 to 22, 2026, between 11 AM and 7 PM at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity.
