Birthday Special: Amitabh Bachchan's unforgettable cameos in iconic movies

An accomplished and well recognised personality, also known as the ‘Shahenshah Of Bollywood’, and son of legendary Indian Poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan is surely gifted with the skills of a true artist. He is one of the most versatile and influential actors in the film industry, and his contribution to the Indian Cinema has been immensely applauded, thus recognising him as the ‘Living Legend of Bollywood’. Amitabh who made his acting debut in 1969 with ‘Saat Hindustani’ went on to do films like ‘Sholay’ and ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’. With a filmography of over 200 films, ‘Big B’ has made sure that his silver screen presence manages to leave an everlasting impression on his fans and cinema lovers. As the actor turns 78 today, here’s to revisiting some of his films where he graced his presence with cameo appearances.

English Vinglish

In the movie, Amitabh is seen as a passenger inside an aircraft as he keeps company to Sri Devi who manages to understand the in flight procedures and watch the on-board Hollywood movies. Throughout her in-flight journey Bachchan is seen guiding her. Helmed by Gauri Shinde, the movie also stars Adil Hussain and Priya Anand in pivotal roles.

Ki and Ka

In R Balki’s ‘Ki & Ka’, Arjun Kapoor gets an opportunity to meet the Bachchans as Jaya invites him for lunch after being impressed by his occupation of a house husband who supports his wife to work and make a career. The Bachchans played a turning point in the movie, as Jaya gives a see-off gift to Kareena with an eye-opening letter. Even though Big B wasn’t much impressed with Arjun in the film, while Jaya applauded Arjun, it was interesting to watch the whole scene.

Padman

In the movie, Amitabh was seen in a special appearance as himself as he shared the stage with Akshay Kumar in the final scenes of the movie. Akshay Kumar gives an iconic speech concerning menstrual hygiene in India. Big B is seen applauding and praising him for the same. Helmed by R Balki, the film also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte for important roles.

Helicopter Eela

Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, the film saw Bachchan playing himself for a role as he was considered to be perfect for that particular scene. In a report, the film’s lead star Kajol stated that it was only him who could have done this role perfect and fortunately,he immediately gave a green signal for the role very sweetly. The film also united Big B and Kajol on-screen after 17 years. They were earlier seen together in Karan Johar’s ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.’

The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann's classic movie which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, saw Amitabh Bachchan’s first appearance in a Hollywood film. Big B plays the role of a flamboyant and suave Jewish money lender named Meyer Wolfsheim for cameo performance.

Biwi No 1

In the film, Amitabh is seen doing a cameo role of a host. After the married couple gets separated in the movie they both go to attend the annual day function of their kids separately. Amitabh is seen hosting the event. Directed by David Dhawan, the movie stars Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Sushmita Sen in pivotal characters.

Chashme Buddoor

Rajkamal’s ‘Chashme Buddoor’ is a fun filled romantic comedy revolving around three young friends, as they prank each other, while wooing the same girl. The movie sees, AMitabh Bachchan appearing as himself in the movie for his guest appearance.

Jalwa

One of the most hilarious moments in the movie was to watch Amitabh listening to his praises by the police officer who claims to know him since childhood. Bachchan appears as himself in the movie as a film personality. Directed by Pankaj Parashar, the movie also features Naseeruddin Shah and Archana Puran Singh in pivotal roles.

Chhoti Si Baat

Directed by Basu Chattejee, ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ is a HIndi Romantic comedy which stars Vidya Sinha, Amol Palekar and Ashok Kumar in pivotal roles. In the movie, Amitabh graces his presence, with his guest appearance while he seeks advice from Ashok Kumar’s character.

Gol Maal

Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Gol Maal’ was a hilarious musical comedy which featured Amitabh for a Cameo appearance in a scene where Amol Palekar goes with Deven Verma to try Kurta-pajama. The movie also had Bindiya Goswami and Utpal Dutt in pivotal roles.
