For a female actor, choice is a luxury: Kritika Kamra

Kritika Kamra has seamlessly navigated television, films and OTT through different phases of her career. But for her, the idea of “transition” is no longer how she wants to be identified. Last seen on television in Prem Ya Paheli — Chandrakanta (2017), she reflects, “The transition for me, I hope, is complete. I’ve done enough work since I quit television, and I want to be on the other side of it now.”She calls this her “2.0 era”— a chapter that began with films like Mitron and Bheed, and OTT shows such as Bambai Meri Jaan and Gyaarah Gyaarah. “I feel like I have enough on my filmography today in that space. I’m excited for this next chapter. I won’t say I’m content, as you can’t be fully content as an artiste, but I’m happy in the space I am in and with the kind of work I’m choosing from,” she says to Mumbai Mirror.For Kritika, waiting between projects is a conscious choice — even if it stretches into months. “This job is entirely about that. For me, the struggle has been looking for the kind of work I want to do. Especially being a female actor, choice is a luxury — you have to really wait and work for many years sometimes. When you start becoming choosy, the wait becomes longer.”She acknowledges that while the landscape has improved, the odds remain tougher for women. “It’s better than what it was before, but we’ve still not reached a space where it’s easy to find well-written, well-rounded female characters. I want that power of choice, because I’ve worked so hard to earn it.”
