'Gadar 2', OMG 2', Dream Girl 2': Sequels that ruled at the box office in 2023

With the change in the kind of content that is being consumed, a lot of moviemakers are banking on the sequels of their blockbuster films to attract the audiences to the theatres and needless to say, it has been working wonderfully well! After sequels like 'KGF: Chapter 2', 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2' and 'Drishyam 2' in 2022, the year 2023 is also high on franchise films. Right from Sunny Deol starrer 'Gadar 2' to Akshay Kumar starrer 'OMG 2', here's taking a look at sequels that ruled the box office in 2023.

'Gadar: The Katha Continues'

22 years after the blockbuster release of Anil Sharma's 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha', starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead, the makers of the film released the sequel, 'Gadar: The Katha Continues' this year. The film created a lot of buzz even before its release and opened to packed theatres on August 11. It has since been doing some record-breaking business at the box office. The Sunny Deol starrer has reportedly shot past Rs 460 crore mark at the box office in just a span of three weeks. It is still powering ahead with the same gusto with the Onam and Raksha Bandhan holidays falling on Tuesday and Wednesday.

'OMG: Oh My God! 2'

After the critical and box office success of 'OMG: Oh My God!' in 2012, the makers came up with the sequel to the film in 2023. The film stars Pankaj Tripathi, Akshay Kumar and Yami Gautam in lead roles. The film garnered a lot of critical acclaim and has been doing a decent business at the box office. The film has already crossed the 100 crore mark and has been inching closer to Rs 140 crore at the box office. This comes despite the film receiving A-certificate from the Censor Board. Various fan clubs of Akshay Kumar have been protesting on social media against the A-certificate issued by the Censor Board by signing some online petitions. However, they haven't been effective for now.

'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse'

Not only has 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' vastly outperformed its immediate predecessor, 2018’s 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse', the animated sequel is actually playing like a live-action Marvel movie at the box office. Now in its seventh week of release, the movie has passed the $650 million mark at the global box office. The film has stayed steady despite a revolving door of competition. 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' has received a glowing response from both audiences and critics.

'Dream Girl 2'

Ayushmann Khurrana and Nushrratt Bharuccha starrer 'Dream Girl' received a lot of love and appreciation from the audience in 2019. After the success of the first instalment, the makers released the sequel in 2023 and it has been receiving positive reviews from all sides. The film, which released on August 25, has been doing a decent business at the box office. The film set the cash registers ringing at the box office on its first day by collecting Rs 10.69 crore. The sequel has done an overall business of Rs 45.41 crore at the box office in just four days since its release. The film stars Ayushmann alongside Ananya Panday and others.
