1/5

‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’

‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ is one of them. Aman (Shah Rukh Khan) has a terminal illness that he hides from Naina (Preity Zinta) so she can be happy. Aman brings Rohit (Saif Ali Khan) into the picture and encourages him to purchase a ring to propose to and marry Naina. He does not state it or confirm it in dialogue, but Aman's actions carry with them the fulfillment of the promise about stepping aside for someone that was still alive. The actions spoke and often how it is represented to us in film can last forever.

2/5

‘Jab We Met’

Beyond being merely a tale of romance, ‘Jab We Met’ is a narrative of self-realization. Geet (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and Aditya (Shahid Kapoor) have an unusual attachment to each other, with the subtle intention of healing emotional scars. The undescribed intentions they promise to each other are incredibly simple: they will be a caring guide, providing comfort along the way to happiness. They demonstrate that even the most intimate two people can make a strong attachment to one another without expressing it in words.

3/5

‘Veer-Zaara’

In ‘Veer-Zaara’, Veer (Shah Rukh Khan) and Zaara (Preity Zinta) are separated by borders and religion. Their love endures quietly. In regard to their promises to each other, they assume loyalty and hope for their lives and love. Their unarticulated vows of loyalty and hope endure through decades of separation and Veer’s imprisonment. Their love endured all behind the veil of unspoken promises. Love sustained beyond time without the need for spoken words.

4/5

‘Barfi!’

Similarly, the narrative of 'Barfi!' emphasizes the connection between Barfi played by Ranbir Kapoor and Jhilmil played by Priyanka Chopra, where their bond is rooted in gestures, care, and understanding rather than conversation. Their bond holds a suggestive promise of love, patience, and acceptance. The film shows, once again, in a different but similar manner, that love can be expressed in simplicity purely through wanting to help and acts of kindness instead of verbal communication.

5/5

‘Lootera’

In a similar vein, 'Lootera' tells the story of Pakhi (Sonakshi Sinha) and Varun (Ranveer Singh) - one of love, betrayal, and loss. The only remnant of hope that Varun leaves is a painted last leaf. A last leaf and a coolness, if anything, is an indication of hope and fair closure. The narrative is bittersweet and reconfirms that gestures can be highly emotional and carry meaning without needing to privilege a word.
