Guru Dutt was not his real name.

Born in Bangalore in 1925, Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone eventually adopted 'Guru Dutt' as his screen identity—a name that is a mix of spirituality and creativity. As a son of a Saraswat Brahmin family originally from Karnataka, he grew up multilingual, speaking Bengali, Hindi, and Kannada, amongst other languages.

He was a trained dancer.

Guru Dutt was trained at Uday Shankar's India Culture Centre in Almora before entering the world of films, where he learned classical dance and drama. Because of this training, his artistic aspirations were strongly influenced in his film career and artistic contributions. After Uday Shankar, Guru Dutt worked as a choreographer at Prabhat Film Company, laying the foundation for his eventual transition to films.

He was initially rejected by Bombay Talkies.

Early in his film career, Guru Dutt applied to work at the famous Bombay Talkies Studio and was rejected. Dev Anand, a close friend during his struggles, offered Dutt his first significant opportunity to direct Baazi (1951) under the Navketan banner. His career as a successful director began with this film.

He made a film that was never released.

According to Upperstall, almost no one knows about “Gauri,” a film Guru Dutt finished shooting in the early 1950s. The film starred Geeta Bali and is thought to have been shelved for some mysterious reason (most likely financial or maybe creative issues). The negatives are now thought to be lost, and it has become one of the great “what if” stories of Bollywood.

His death is still surrounded by mystery.

Despite being officially determined to be a suicide by overdose in 1964, Guru Dutt's demise has long been clouded in mystery and tragedy. According to Bollywoodshaadis, the controversial filmmaker had attempted suicide on at least two previous occasions, battled with alcoholism and depression, and was in a tumultuous marriage with singer Geeta Dutt. Some biographers and family members even now believe it could have been accidental, since Guru Dutt was reportedly making plans to produce new films only days before his death.
