To the world, he will always be remembered as the towering legend Dilip Kumar — the man who redefined acting in Hindi cinema. But behind the iconic name was a journey filled with struggle, intelligence, discipline and unexpected twists. From selling fruits on the streets of Pune to becoming the first true megastar of Indian films, the life of Dilip Kumar reads like a movie in itself. Dilip Kumar was born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan on December 11, 1922, at his family home in Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar, then part of British India and now in Pakistan. He was one of twelve children born to Lala Ghulam Sarwar Khan and Ayesha Begum. When he entered the film industry, he changed his name to Dilip Kumar — a decision that would become one of the most celebrated identities in Indian cinema.

Before the camera made him immortal, Dilip Kumar worked as a scriptwriter at Bombay Talkies in 1942. Thanks to his strong command of the Urdu language, he earned a monthly salary of Rs 1,250, which was considered a very high amount in the 1940s. His background as a writer played a major role in shaping his deep understanding of emotions, characters and storytelling on screen. Before stepping into acting, he also sold fruits in Pune, Maharashtra.

Dilip Kumar remains the only actor of his generation to have played a triple role in a single film. He delivered this rare feat in Bairaag. Earlier, in the 1967 classic Ram Aur Shyam, he played twin brothers separated at birth — and also portrayed their father — showcasing his unmatched versatility.

According to former cricketer Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Dilip Kumar once hit a six off a renowned bowler during a charity match, leaving the crowd amazed by his sporting talent.

In one of the most beautiful twists of fate, Dilip Kumar had once declined a film opposite Saira Banu. But destiny intervened. The two eventually fell in love and married in 1966. At the time, Dilip Kumar was 44 and Saira Banu was 22. Their marriage went on to become one of Bollywood’s most cherished and enduring love stories.
