'Mohabbatein' to 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham': 5 Times Bollywood movies gave us memorable Diwali scenes

As the lamps get lit, sweets get shared while decorations are done with perfection, and ethnic look gets trendier, there’s a celebration in the air today. Bollywood has beautifully incorporated the festival of lights with their movies in the most creative ways possible. Sometimes, the scenes are memorable due to a dance number like that in Mohabbatein, or a little one being born on the auspicious day in ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001)

The Diwali scene shown in the movie between Shah Rukh Khan and Jaya Bachchan is one such moment etched in every movie fanatic’s heart. When Rahul Raichand arrives home, his mom (Jaya Bachchan ) senses his arrival without being aware of it. Directed by Karan Johar, the movie also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor in pivotal characters.

Vaastav (1999)

The movie featured Sanjay Dutt as a gangster who comes out of his hide-out on Diwali to meet his family. Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, there was a scene in the film where Sanjay Dutt explains to his mom (Reema Lagu) the worth of the gold he adorns, while delivering the most iconic dialogue ‘Yeh dekh pachchass tola’. The movie also starred Namrata Shirodkar, Sanjay Narvekar, Mohinish Behl, Paresh Rawal, Reema Lagoo and Shivaji Satam in pivotal characters.

Chachi 420 (1997)

In Kamal Haasan’s ‘Chachi 420’, there was a scene in the movie where Chachi goes to Durgaprasad Bhardwaj's home for an occupation as Bharti's tutor, she saves Bharti from a terrible firecracker incident by pushing her off the pool and gets the work. Inspired from the 1993 Hollywood film Mrs Doubtfire, the Hindi comedy remake featured Tabu, Amrish Puri, Om Puri, Johnny Walker, Paresh Rawal, Rajendranath Zutshi, Ayesha Jhulka, Nassar and Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles.

Mohabbatein (2000)

Back in 2000, Shah Rukh Khan’s hit movie ‘Mohabbatein’ had a Diwali song ‘Pairon Mein Bandhan Hai’. The melodious number has a special place in everyone’s heart especially due to the star-studded cast. Directed by Aditya Chopra, the musical romantic drama film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Jugal Hansraj, Jimmy Shergill, Shamita Shetty among others.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994)

Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the iconic movie had a cute Diwali scene where Renuka Shahne’s character gives birth to a little boy during the festive season. The whole family celebrates Diwali on the occasion of his arrival which is memorable due to an iconic number ‘Diktana’.The movie also starred Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Mohnish Bahl in pivotal characters.
