Payal Kapadia wins the Cannes grand prix: All you need to know about her FTII connect
Filmmaker Payal Kapadia made history by becoming the first Indian to win the esteemed Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival for her movie, 'All We Imagine As Light.' This film marked the first time in over thirty years that an Indian film was shown in the main competition at Cannes.

It's not widely known that in 2015, she led a major protest at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). The protest was against the appointment of actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhar as the chairman. Payal Kapadia was a prominent figure in the 2015 protest at FTII. Along with other students, she protested against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman, citing his lack of vision for the institution. To show her disagreement, she boycotted classes and protested for over four months.
During the protest, Payal faced disciplinary action, and her grant from FTII was stopped. However, after Gajendra Chauhan's term as chairman ended, the institute announced its support for Kapadia in 2017. At that time, she was in her third year of the course. Her short film 'Afternoon Clouds' was selected for the 70th Cannes Film Festival.
