Sanjay Gupta demands biopic on Mithun Chakraborty, says 'just like Michael…’

Antoine Fuqua's biographical film ‘Michael’, starring Jaafar Jackson as the iconic pop legend Michael Jackson, has been generating a lot of buzz since its theatrical release in April. The film takes audiences through Jackson's incredible rise from a child star with the Jackson 5 to the "King of Pop," while also exploring his personal struggles, controversies and lasting cultural impact. Inspired by the film, renowned filmmaker Sanjay Gupta recently took to social media to make a strong case for a biopic on veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty. He compared Mithun's extraordinary journey from a modest background to achieving superstardom in Indian cinema to that of Michael Jackson, saying it is every bit as deserving of a cinematic adaptation.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Sanjay made a passionate case for a biopic on Mithun. He wrote, "Just like MICHAEL, we have a star whose story demands to be told. Struggle. Sacrifice. Superstardom. A kid from Calcutta who had nothing but hunger and rhythm. Mithun Chakraborty. Mithun Da — your biopic is long overdue."

Mithun Chakraborty's journey from Kolkata to Bollywood superstardom

Mithun Chakraborty was born in Kolkata and trained at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune before making his mark in Bollywood. His big break came with Mrinal Sen's ‘Mrigayaa’ (1976), which earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Though his early days in mainstream cinema were not easy, he eventually went on to become one of the biggest stars of Indian films in the 1980s and 1990s. His popularity soared to new heights with the 1982 blockbuster ‘Disco Dancer’, which was a massive hit not just in India but also in the Soviet Union.
