Shah Rukh Khan's iconic home: Times when the 'Badhshah' of Bollywood spoke about Mannat

Shah Rukh Khan's iconic Mumbai residence, Mannat, holds immense personal and emotional significance for the superstar. He has often spoken about his journey to acquire it and the dreams it represents. Here are some subheads detailing his sentiments about Mannat:

2/6

The Dream of Owning a Home

Shah Rukh Khan has frequently shared that Mannat was not just a luxury purchase, but the fulfillment of a deeply personal dream. In a throwback video with Midday India, he revealed, "It's one of the most difficult things I've done in my life… is to buy this house. I don't have a house anywhere in the world. I didn't have a house because my parents died. I have a house fetish. I want a house. I have always wanted a house." This sentiment was reiterated in various interviews, including a 2005 documentary "The Inner World of Shah Rukh Khan," where he emphasized his longing for a stable home after his parents' passing.

A promise to Gauri and a symbol of hard work

The story of Mannat also involves a promise Shah Rukh made to his wife, Gauri Khan. Director Aziz Mirza, who worked with SRK on 'Yes Boss', recalled in an interview with Radio Nasha that in the late 90s, during walks along Bandstand, Shah Rukh would admire the grand villa (then called Villa Vienna) and promise Gauri that he would buy it one day. This highlights Mannat not just as a financial achievement, but as a testament to his perseverance and dedication to fulfilling a dream for his family.

More than a house: A family legacy

For SRK, Mannat is far more than just a building; it's a symbol of family heritage and security. In the aforementioned throwback video, also cited in a March 2025 Times of India article, he explained, "When I had kids, I got this house. It's my family's house. We took a decision, we'll always live in Bombay. So my great-grandchildren are going to live in this house like some old Parsi family." He added that while his commercial properties could be taken away, his house provides security for his wife, sister, and children, emphasizing its irreplaceable value.

5/6

Overcoming financial challenges in furnishing mannat

While acquiring Mannat was a monumental task, furnishing it presented another challenge, as SRK humorously revealed. At the launch event for Gauri Khan's book "My Life in Design", Shah Rukh shared, "We managed to buy Mannat, but then we had to rebuild it because it was kind of broken. We didn't have the money to furnish it. Eventually, I asked Gauri to become the designer of the house." This anecdote illustrates the humble beginnings of their iconic home's interior design, born out of necessity and Gauri's talent.

6/6

The 'unsaid rules' and spiritual significance

Shah Rukh has also shared insights into the "unsaid rules" within Mannat and its spiritual aspects. In a throwback video widely referenced by media outlets in March 2025, he mentioned a rule about not taking phone calls inside the house, often retreating to the bathroom for calls to maintain family privacy. He also spoke about the presence of both Hindu deities like Ganesh and Lakshmi, and the Quran, in a special spiritual corner, expressing his desire for his children to connect with God regardless of their faith, a sentiment that makes him "very emotional."
