After making his debut with an offbeat movie like Iqbal and then going on to Bollywood masala movies like Om Shanti Om, Golmaal Returns and critically acclaimed Dor, talented actor Shreyas Talpade is back with a horror movie ClickHow was the experience of doing your first horror movie Click?I am genuinely happy to be doing my first horror movie, that too with director Sangeet Sivan, who is known for his superb comedy hits like Kya Kool Hai Hum? When he called me to do another movie with him, I expected another comedy, but he said ‘Let’s make a horror film!’.
I liked the story and here we are! I personally feel that this is Sangeeth’s forte. To a make a horror movie, certain ‘wackiness’ has to be there, to think of various effective camera angles and he is really good with this. Personally, I believe Click is a ‘romantic horror movie’ because at its crux lies a love story.
Why the title Click? The movie revolves around the camera and the pictures it takes. So, Click is an appropriate title.
Earlier too, there have been movies based on same concept, like 8x10 Tasveer, Aa Dekhe Zara... What’s different here?In those movies, they dealt with the future whereas in Click, the movie deals with the lead character’s past.
So, what are you doing in the movieI am playing a fashion photographer who looks very ordinary in the beginning but as the story moves, his character becomes mysterious. After a while, you will start wondering if the guy is abnormal or it’s the people or situation surrounding him. There is a certain element of suspense, which becomes scary with each scene.
Is your character a flamboyant type as normally the fashion photographers are portrayed in our movies?I won’t be like Atul Kasbekar or John and Akshay in Garam Masala, but somewhere, I have tried to ape Atul. Unfortunately, before I reach that level, scary things start happening with this guy. And, if such things happen with Atul; even he will drop his camera and run away
...hahaha!
Bollywood has seen horror films from Ramsey brothers, RGV and Vikram Bhatt. Will you compare Click with any of their films?I won’t compare Click with any other movies made by these great directors, as there is a vast difference in each. In Ramu’s movies, there is always debate happening between supernatural and science; whereas in Click we are talking about all the horrible, supernatural things happening with this guy, period! The USP of Click is that we have tried to keep it modern technically, but at the same time the supernatural feel has been kept intact. Also, most horror movies are song-less, but we have 4-5 different songs which takes the story ahead. That’s why I call it a ‘romantic horror’ movie.
Growing up, which was your favourite horror movie?Oh, I loved Ramsay movies – Puraana Mandir, Veerana. I also liked Evil Dead, Omen. We used to get the video player on rent and watch all these movies at home with all curtains closed. Even now, if my wife Dipti and I plan to watch a horror movie at home, we make sure that we start it as late as possible. Late nights make it sound scarier.
Any supernatural experiences while filming for Click? It happens with my last two comedy films — the fact that they didn’t work at the box-office, which is the biggest horror of my life!
So, news of stars experiencing the supernatural while filming such movies is just PR buzz? When you are shooting for horror movies, you go to different locations which can be spooky and sometimes you can feel uneasy in such places. For Click, we were shooting in a bungalow in Mauritius where I was not comfortable, but obviously I couldn’t voice my thoughts for fear of being ridiculed. But I surely experienced some negative energy in that place.
