5 Indian villages honoured with National Tourism Award for responsible tourism

The Ministry of Tourism annually recognises villages through its Best Tourism Villages Competition, which seeks to honour and celebrate villages that managed to make it big in terms of rural tourism destination. The award aims to promote the commitment of the villages towards sustainability in all of the aspects like social, economic, and environmental. So, this year too the Indian Government awarded winners in 8 categories, such as community based tourism, adventure tourism, vibrant village, craft, agri tourism, spiritual and wellness, heritage, and responsible tourism.

Located near Orchha, it’s the first village under the Responsible Tourism Mission in Madhya Pradesh. Those visiting this village get the opportunity to immerse in Bundeli culture, and also form a deep connection with the local tribal community. There are also homestays featuring traditional architecture to ensure staying shouldn’t be a concern when here. Needless, to say that the village’s picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage further make it a unique rural destination to visit.

A scenic village in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, it has managed to gain popularity as a sustainable tourism destination, with special focus on eco-friendly practices. Known for attractions like Dudhani Lake, the village promotes responsible tourism, intertwining local culture with environmental preservation.

Located in the Kozhikode district, Kadalundi has transformed into a model green destination through the Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission's STREET (Sustainable Tangible Responsible Experiential Ethnic Tourism) project. This initiative, with the support of the local community, promotes inclusive growth and spreads tourism activities through theme-based streets. Visitors can engage in backwater boating, savor local cuisine, and explore traditional crafts. The "One Tourist One Tree" initiative also contributes to reforestation, enhancing the area’s green cover.

Recognized for its responsible tourism efforts, Tar village in Ladakh sets an example with its eco-friendly practices and community-based tourism. The village’s emphasis on preserving its fragile environment and rich Ladakhi culture while promoting sustainable tourism has established it as a leader in responsible travel.

Situated in Chhindwara district, Sabarvani has become a tourism hotspot since 2019, attracting international tourists. With a strong focus on cleanliness and natural beauty, the village offers cultural experiences, ethnic food, and agricultural activities. Nearby attractions like Anhoni Hot Spring and the Satpura National Park buffer zone make it a tranquil getaway for nature enthusiasts.
