She Started as a Child Singer with Lata Mangeshkar

Before stepping into acting, Padmini Kolhapure began her career as a child singer. She lent her voice as a chorus singer in films, and even sang with legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar. Her musical talent runs in the family — her father, Pandharinath Kolhapure, was a trained classical singer and played the harmonium for Bollywood music directors.

She Was Just 15 When She Won a Filmfare Award

Padmini made waves with her fearless performance in Ahista Ahista (1981), but it was her powerful role in Prem Rog (1982), directed by Raj Kapoor, that earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress — at just 15 years old. Her maturity and emotional depth stunned audiences and critics alike.

She Was Banned from Films for Hugging Prince Charles

In 1980, during a public event, Padmini greeted Prince Charles with a hug — an act that stirred massive controversy in India at the time. The hug, seen as too bold and “untraditional,” led to a temporary backlash, and she was reportedly banned by some filmmakers for her boldness — though it never stopped her career momentum.

She Turned Down Major Roles in Later Years

Despite being one of the top actresses of the 80s, Padmini stepped away from films at the peak of her career after marrying producer Pradeep Sharma. She later admitted in interviews that she turned down several high-profile projects and preferred to focus on her family and selective acting opportunities.

She’s Related to Shraddha Kapoor

Many don’t realize that Padmini Kolhapure is Shraddha Kapoor’s aunt. Her sister, Shivangi Kolhapure, is Shraddha’s mother, making Padmini part of one of Bollywood’s most artistically rich families. Her niece credits her as a major influence and source of inspiration.
