Johnny Lever was born as John Prakash Rao Janumala in Andhra Pradesh. The name “Johnny Lever” was coined when he performed mimicry at a Hindustan Unilever company event, where he used to work as a manual labourer. His performance was such a hit that people began calling him “Johnny Lever” — and the name stuck.

Johnny Lever studied only till the seventh grade, as financial constraints forced him to drop out of school. He started working at a young age to support his family, but he used mimicry and street performances to rise out of poverty — eventually turning his natural gift into a career.

Johnny Lever honed his comic timing by mimicking teachers, Bollywood stars, and even street vendors. He began performing at local shows and social events in Mumbai’s chawls, where his act — a mix of dance, mimicry, and spontaneous comedy — became hugely popular in working-class neighborhoods.

Johnny Lever became a devout Christian after a deeply personal experience: his son was reportedly healed from a serious illness, which he credits to prayer and faith. Since then, Johnny has been open about his spiritual beliefs and often shares his testimony in faith-based gatherings.

Before stand-up comedy was mainstream, Johnny Lever was already performing solo comic acts on stage across India and abroad.
