1/5

Pioneering the cabaret style

Helen wasn’t just a dancer – she moved into a lingua franca that fused the Western cabaret world with a quintessentially Indian cinematic style. She often combined jazz, ballroom, and Latin ballroom influences, so her numbers were strikingly original and years ahead of their time. In doing so, she transformed cabaret from a pastime to an art form that was revered in Bollywood.

2/5

Iconic performances

Her song milestones in Hindi cinema are countless. From the carefree and light-hearted 'Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu' (1958), to the full-on outburst of 'Piya Tu Ab To Aaja' (1971), whatever song, whenever Helen was featured, she turned them into visual spectacles. In 'O Haseena Zulfon Wali' (1966) she smiled in every scene, also showing off the next level of chemistry with her co-stars; 'Yeh Mera Dil’ (1978) (from the film ‘Don’) is widely considered as one of the slickest, and sensational performances in any Indian film period, we can point to any one of millions of popular song and dance numbers in Hindi cinema, that have been directly influenced by all of these selections.

3/5

Breaking stereotypes

Helen's artistry was substantial, for as much as leading ladies were period to demure traditional roles, she was anything but. Her performance characterizations were consistently bold, glamorous, and deliberate. She was the full embodiment of the “vamp" - in fact, she was usually cast as the nightclub dancer, the temptress, and/or the outsider. Helen dressed her roles with dignity and charm, and made them the characters that drove the story rather than mere peripheral distractions. She represented an entirely Other, challenging Bollywood's constructs of women in their Many forms.

4/5

Awards and recognition

Helen was not just the quintessential item number; she was an institution. Her artistry was acknowledged in a formal sense, as she was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009. She was likewise awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, reinforcing how much she influenced Hindi cinema over the decades.

5/5

A prolific career

Helen's credits cover over 500 films, making her career extraordinary in its length and breadth. Starting as Bollywood's dancing sensation in the 1940s up until the 1980s, she modernized, or recreated herself, or reinvented herself, to be able to stay in the entertainment industry. Her versatility as an artist and continued ability to survive a long career is truly inspiring.
