Viju Khote, Kalia of 'Sholay', passes away

NEW DELHI: Noted Bollywood actor Viju Khote passed away on Monday in Mumbai due to multiple organ failure. He was 77.


The actor was best known for his role in the blockbuster film 'Sholay' in which he starred as dacoit Kalia. The actor is also known for his roles in films like 'Andaz Apna Apna', where he starred as a Robert.

Khote also featured in popular films like 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', 'Ventilator' and the TV show 'Zabaan Sambhalke'.

"He passed away today at 6.55 am peacefully in his sleep at the residence. He had been unwell since quite sometime. He had multiple organ failure," actor Bhavana Balsavar, his niece said.

"He did not wish to die in the hospital so we had brought him home few days ago. It is a great loss for all of us," she said.

The last rites of the actor will be performed at Chandan Wadi around 11 am.

The actor, who worked in a number of Hindi and Marathi films, had been working in the film industry since 1964.
