At the peak of his Bollywood career,
Vinod Khanna shocked fans by walking away from fame and success to follow spiritual guru Osho. Decades later, his second wife, Kavita Khanna, has shared rare and deeply personal insights into that phase of his life in a video posted on her YouTube channel.
From the moment she met Vinod Khanna to his spiritual devotion, trauma after leaving Osho’s commune, and his later faith in Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Kavita offered an unfiltered account of the actor’s inner journey.
‘My flowers never die’: Kavita Khanna on meeting Vinod Khanna
Recalling their first meeting in 1989, Kavita said it was Vinod Khanna’s 43rd birthday party, though they barely spoke that evening.
“We met in 1989, and it was Vinod's 43rd birthday party at his house. And I didn't speak to him during the evening. And then when we were leaving, my friends and I, Vinod came to see us off at the door, at the lift,” she said.
Describing a moment that stayed with her, she added, “All the way up the stairs and down the stairs were bouquets of flowers. So I said, what are you going to do with all your flowers? And he said, I'm going to keep them. And I said, but, you know, why don't you give them to a hospital or something? Because there's so many of them and they'll die. And he just looked at me and he said, my flowers never die.”
Kavita felt that this reflected his spiritual nature. “I think that was the gardener in Vinod because he had been Osho's gardener. He was very spiritual from when he was a child.”
From stardom to sannyas: Why Vinod Khanna turned to Osho
Kavita revealed that Vinod’s spiritual curiosity began early. “When he was 17 and he bought Autobiography of a Yogi. And at the time, he said that he didn't realize it then, but Osho was in the bookstore at the same time.”
She explained that a series of personal losses became the tipping point. “The tipping point... from giving up this unbelievable material life that he had, the adoration he had, the adulation and the success, was when there were a number of deaths in the family within two years. When his mother passed, he just went to Osho, took sannyas.”
She described his seva at the commune, saying, “Vinod was Osho's gardener... if you were the gardener, you were there in his garden. But that was his seva.”
Life inside the commune and the chaos that followed
Kavita spoke at length about the intensity of life at Osho’s commune, particularly in Oregon, where Vinod was deeply immersed.
“There were some courses that Vinod was allowed in, which were meant only for the foreigners who were there. And these were the encounter groups,” she said, adding that the spiritual practice was extremely physical.
She also recalled the darker turn things took. “They built a city, and I think they wanted to win the elections... they had their own army... no one could understand what was going on.”
Referring to Osho’s secretary, she said, “Sheila was, I believe... tyrannical. And then there was this whole thing about the water supply being poisoned.”
One of Vinod’s deepest pains, she revealed, was being separated from his children. “He had not seen his children. And he used to tell me that he would just be crying and couldn't go back to India.”
‘Very, very traumatized’: Vinod Khanna after leaving Osho
Kavita said Vinod left Oregon before everything collapsed, but the emotional toll stayed with him.
“When he left Oregon, he was very, very, very traumatized,” she said, adding that it affected him even professionally. “He told me that he would go on set, deliver an amazing shot, and come back into his van and then be weeping and weeping.”
She revealed that Vinod never returned to the Pune ashram or met Osho again, except for one final interaction. “Osho said to Vinod that I want you to be in charge of the ashram now in Pune. And Vinod said that for the first and only time, I said no to my guru.”

Kavita recalled how Vinod later guided her towards Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. “He looked at it, and he said, Kavita, this is the Guru for you. Don't miss this time.”
She described a moment at a private satsang that deeply moved her. “Gurudev said that, Vinod has no questions... Vinod immediately knew who and what this presence was. He knew that this was the full stop.”
Lung cancer diagnosis and a ‘complete cure’
In 2001, Vinod Khanna was diagnosed with lung cancer. “He used to smoke 40 to 80 cigarettes a day,” Kavita said, adding that doctors advised removing half a lung.
They sought Gurudev’s blessings, after which Vinod delayed surgery and focused on breathwork and Sudarshan Kriya. “There was no cancer. It was just unbelievable. There was no cancer,” she said.
Even international doctors were stunned. “They just could not accept that... they said there had been a complete, complete cure.”
Bladder cancer and faith till the end
Years later, Vinod was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Kavita said the prognosis was grim. “There was a 25% chance that he would be alive after two years.”
Vinod chose a path guided by faith. “He said... I've led a full life. And if my time to go has come, I'm ready to go.”
After treatment and Panch Karma, the cancer disappeared again. “The cancer had gone... we did the scans there, and it was gone,” she said.
Though the illness eventually returned, Kavita said Vinod’s faith never wavered. “He had complete faith in Gurudev right up to the last conversation.”
