When Rajinikanth recalled Amitabh Bachchan’s struggles before his comeback with ‘Mohabbatein’; 'He did anything and everything'

In a throwback moment, Rajinikanth once opened up about the challenging phase in Amitabh Bachchan’s life when the superstar faced severe financial setbacks. While today he is celebrated as one of Indian cinema’s biggest icons, there was a time when things took a drastic turn. This lesser-known chapter reflects resilience, humility, and an unwavering commitment to work.At the peak of his career, Amitabh Bachchan stepped away from the spotlight for a brief period. He later launched his company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited, which unfortunately did not succeed. The financial losses pushed him into a difficult situation. According to Rajinikanth, he even had to sell properties in Mumbai, including his cherished home in Juhu, marking a significant low phase. During this struggling period, Rajinikanth recalled how some members of the film industry reacted insensitively. Instead of support, there were instances where people mocked the downfall of Amitabh Bachchan. Despite the criticism and isolation, the actor chose to stay determined. He focused on finding opportunities to rebuild his career rather than reacting to negativity around him.Sharing a powerful anecdote with SCREEN, Rajinikanth said, “One day, he walked to Yash Chopra’s house wearing a monkey cap because he no longer had a driver as he couldn’t pay them. He asked Yash for work.” He added, “Yash immediately brought a signed cheque and gave him, but Amitji declined saying he will take it only if he is given work.” This moment led to ‘Mohabbatein’.With ‘Mohabbatein’, directed by Yash Chopra and co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and others, Amitabh Bachchan began his second innings. Around the same time, he also became the face of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. These projects re-established him in the industry and brought back his popularity among audiences.Recalling his dedication, Rajinikanth said, “He did anything and everything. He did all kinds of ads.” He further added, “For three years, despite having many health issues, he worked for 18 hours a day and cleared all his dues.” Not only did Amitabh Bachchan recover financially, but he also regained his stature, proving his resilience. Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth shared screen space in the 1991 film ‘Hum’, directed by Mukul S. Anand. The action-drama also starred Govinda and Kimi Katkar in key roles.
