What began as a routine early-morning flight turned into an unsettling experience for National Award-winning Hindustani classical vocalist
Mahesh Kale, whose Mumbai-San Francisco journey via Dubai was abruptly cut short mid-air following an emergency near Dubai airport amid ongoing tensions in West Asia.
He shares, “We took off from Mumbai at around 4.15 am. After reaching cruising altitude, I dozed off and was woken up by the stewardess, who said that due to an emergency (an explosion reported near Dubai airport), the plane was returning to Mumbai.”
With limited clarity and a sudden change of course, the uncertainty of the situation lingered on board. Mahesh recalls staying composed through the experience. “I didn’t panic, but since internet was available, I sent a text message to my wife in San Francisco about the sudden change. I just felt grateful that everyone on the flight – the passengers, the attendants, the entire staff – was safe. What could have been a lot worse or more traumatic had been averted.”
Reflecting on the larger context, the singer expressed concern over the fragility of the times. “Wars are always painful. To lose innocent lives is something that has a deep impact,” he said. Mahesh, who is now back home in San Francisco, says, “I can only hope that this uncertain situation ends soon, and peace prevails.”
Speaking about the role of music in such times, Kale emphasised its quiet but powerful ability to heal and centre people. “I truly believe music heals; music calms you, it makes you feel joy and gratitude. People who feel gratitude and joy usually do not fight. I really wish more people listen to Indian classical music, to experience a deep sense of satisfaction, peace and joy, so that all of us can find forgiveness in our hearts.”
