Mammootty once feared his career was over after a bike accident; asked 'Will anyone ever cast me in a movie again?’

Today, Mammootty is celebrated not just for his remarkable performances but also for the charisma and screen presence that have defined his career for decades. With his commanding voice, imposing personality, and carefully maintained physique, the veteran actor has long been regarded as one of Malayalam cinema's most enduring icons. However, there was a time when a seemingly small accident shook his confidence so deeply that he feared it could bring his acting journey to an abrupt halt.

The incident was recalled by actor and longtime friend Mukesh during a programme hosted by Kairali TV. Sharing memories from the sets of the 1982 film 'Balloon', Mukesh revealed that Mammootty often enjoyed taking him on motorcycle rides between shoots. Recalling one such outing, Mukesh said, "Before he started the bike the first time, I asked him, ‘Mammukka, do you actually know how to ride this?’ Mammootty replied, ‘KG George cast me in the movie ‘Mela’ solely because I knew how to ride a bike; just get on confidently!'" The rides went smoothly at first, but things took a turn during one particular trip.

Mammootty's fall that changed the mood

According to Mukesh, the duo had already completed a couple of enjoyable rides when an unexpected mishap occurred. "We went for rounds on the first and second days. But on the third day, while taking a curve, we skidded and fell while trying to avoid a cyclist. I jumped up immediately, but he (Mammootty) sustained a minor facial injury," he recalled. While the injury itself was not serious, Mammootty's reaction surprised him.

Mukesh revealed that the sight of blood from a small cut on Mammootty's face triggered an emotional response from the actor. "Although it was just a small wound, there was some blood. Seeing this, Mammukka started crying uncontrollably. He sobbed and asked me, ‘Will I be able to act anymore? Will anyone ever cast me in a movie again?’ No matter how much I tried to console him, he wouldn't stop crying," Mukesh shared.

For an actor whose appearance played a significant role in his on-screen image, even a minor facial injury seemed devastating at that moment.

The memory Mukesh still can't forget

The former Kerala MLA admitted that the incident remains etched in his mind even today because it showed a vulnerable side of the superstar rarely seen by the public. "The ‘epitome of masculinity’ in Malayalam cinema was weeping loudly in front of me. Later, whenever Mammukka delivers explosive dialogues like ‘sense, sensibility, and sensitivity’ in ‘The King’, this is the scene that comes to my mind," he said.

Mammootty's unmatched legacy

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Mammootty has established himself as one of Indian cinema's most respected performers. Having acted in over 400 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English cinema, he continues to remain a towering figure in the industry.

The actor has won three National Film Awards for Best Actor, a distinction shared with actors such as Kamal Haasan and Ajay Devgn. Earlier this year, he was also honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan.

Most recently, Mammootty was seen in director Mahesh Narayanan's 'Patriot', where he reunited on screen with fellow Malayalam superstar Mohanlal after 17 years. Their previous collaboration had been the blockbuster ensemble film 'Twenty:20' in 2008.
