3 years of Lucifer: 5 reasons why the audience loved the Mohanlal starrer

On March 28, 2019, the Malayali audience witnessed a nascent preview of the directing skills of actor Prithviraj Sukumaran with the Mohanlal starrer film ‘Lucifer’. Needless to say, the majority of the audience heaped praise on Prithviraj Sukumaran who effectively weaved together a serious political drama with all the commercial elements and indeed helped in amping up the stardom of Mohanlal. As the film clocks three years since its release, let's take a look at the reasons why the audience loved the political-thriller film ‘Lucifer’.

Mohanlal’s stardom

Prithviraj’s directorial debut ‘Lucifer’ gave a much-needed boost to Mohanlal’s stardom which was actually fading with the back-to-back disappointments that the actor offered. The character Stephen Nedumpally played by Mohanlal had so many layers to it and of course, had elements that satisfied the fans. It's clearly understandable that Prithviraj took extra efforts in presenting Mohanlal’s character to the audience in a more appealing way and he has indeed succeeded in that.

Well-paced screenplay

The script of ‘Lucifer’ may look simple on paper, but where the film excels is its ability in engaging the audience with its well-paced screenplay written by the veteran Murali Gopy. The screenplay of ‘Lucifer’ literally acts as a driving force that carries the audience along with the emotional core of each of the characters such as Stephen Nedumpally, Bobby, Priyadarshini Ramdas, Jathin Ramdas, and Govardhan.

A much needed commercial entertainer

During the year 2019, the Malayalam film industry was flooded with several realistic, feel-good drama films. Although most of these films were exceptional, the Malayali audience were actually wanting for a completely packed mass entertainer. It was at this exact time when ‘Lucifer’ was released. The film was a breath of fresh air for the Malayali audience and as a result, the film earned big at the box office.

Perfectly written characters

Kudos to Murali Gopy for creating a perfect working space for Prithviraj Sukumaran to unveil his directing talents. With well-defined characters such as Stephen Nedumpally, Bobby, and Priyadarshini Ramdas, writer Murali Gopy has literally set all the pieces on the table and the job of connecting all these pieces and presenting them to the audience was neatly done by Prithviraj Sukumaran.

The climax

The climax of a film, especially in the case of a commercial entertainer, is where most of the directors lose their grip. But here in ‘Lucifer’, Prithviraj Sukumaran neatly unveils the mystery behind Mohanlal’s character Stephen Nedumpally in a way that is the most appealing to both fans and the general audience. The point where Stephen Nedumpally is revealed to be the underworld don named Khureshi Ab’raam is one of the best elevation scenes in the film and also is one of the reasons why the audience loved Prithviraj’s directorial debut film ‘Lucifer’.
