Actor, dancer, filmmaker, voice artist - Revathi has donned different roles in showbiz. Revathi, who began her career as an actor in 1983 through the Tamil film ‘Mann Vasanai’ has shown her prowess in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films. Starting from her debut movie ‘Mann Vasanai’ to the recent ‘Eriyum Kannadi’, Revathi has managed to be part of films with substance, and it is perhaps the only reason behind being relevant even after nearly four decades of her debut.

The veteran actress is celebrating her birthday today and on this special occasion, let’s take a look at some of the interesting facts about the actress.

​Revathi is her stage name

Revathi was born as Asha Kelunni Nair. Her parents Malank and Lathika named her Asha. But, like many other actors, she too has adopted a screen name and that’s Revathi. Revathi is her screen name, and not the real name.

​Debut with Tamil movie

Although Revathi is a Keralite, she happened to debut as an actor through Tamil movies. She ventured into cinema with the 1983 Tamil film ‘Mann Vasanai’. Revathi was only 17 when she signed her first film. The film was helmed by ace filmmaker Bharathiraja and Revathi played the role of Muthupechi opposite Pandiyan. She also bagged the Filmfare award for the same.

​Landing in M-Town the same year

Revathi stepped into Malayalam cinema the same year of her debut. Her debut Malayalam film is ‘Kattathe Kilikoodu’ released in 1983. She played the role of a young college student Asha and Mohanlal played her love interest in the film!

​She is an award-winning filmmaker

Revathi is a seasoned actor. From the beginning of her career, Revathi showcased exceptional acting chops, and did you know that she is also a talented filmmaker? Yes, you read it right. Revathi donned the director’s cap for the first time in 2002. She helmed the film ‘Mitr, My Friend’. The film featured Shobana in the lead role. The film won three National Awards, including the award for the Best English Film of the year. She has also directed the Bollywood film ‘Phir Milenge’ and also donned the director’s cap for a segment each in ‘Kerala Cafe’ and ‘Mumbai Cutting’.

​Recipient of three National Awards

Revathi is a multifaceted talent. In her career spanning nearly four decades, she has worked in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English movies and showcased remarkable talent. She has received the National Film Award thrice. She bagged her first National award in 1992 for ‘Thevar Magan’. The film had Sivaji Ganesan in the lead role and she won the best-supporting actress award. She also won the Best Feature Film Award for her debut directorial ‘Mitr, My Friend’. In 2011, she was bestowed with the National award for Best Non-feature Film on Family Welfare for ‘Red Building Where the Sun Sets’.
