Outstanding debut films of Mollywood directors

There is a popular saying that, “First impression is always the best impression. No matter how many great impressions you make later on.” Although this saying has its own flaws, it is true to a limit. Coming to films, there are several actors or even directors who have made successful films on their starting stage itself and unfortunately, there are others who terribly fail at first and then pick up from the failure. Here let's look at some of the Mollywood directors who have made outstanding debuts in the film industry.

Jijo Punnoose

It takes much courage to do a high-budget film as one’s debut film, and that too in the Malayalam film industry in the 80s. Director Jijo Punnoose, who is no stranger at trying experiments in filmmaking, shouldered a big risk when he directed his debut epic-drama film ‘Padayottam’. The film received a good collection and became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of the time with the title of being the first 70mm film in South India. Director Jijo Punnoose later directed India’s first 3D film ‘My Dear Kuttichaathan’.

Priyadarshan

Priyadarshan, the Mastercraft filmmaker, started out in the Malayalam film industry with the 1984 comedy film ‘Poochakkoru Mookkuthi’. The film had actors Mohanlal, Shankar, Menaka, Nedumudi Venu, and Sukumar playing major lead roles. In the film, director Priyadarshan unveiled his talent in executing comedy and the flawless acting by the leads enhanced the movie experience among the audience.

P. Padmarajan

Pick any movie from the filmography of the legendary director P.Padmarajan, everything will turn out to be a classic. Padmarajan made his debut with the classic film ‘Peruvazhiyambalam’ starring actor Ashokan in the role of a teenager named Raman. The National award-winning film ‘Peruvazhiyambalam’ is surely a landmark film in Malayalam cinema.

Ranjith

Writer-director Ranjith has written scripts for several classic Malayalam films, but his directorial debut was with the Mohanlal starrer film ‘Ravanaprabhu’. A sequel to the classic IV Sasi film ‘Devasuram’, ‘Ravanaprabhu’ really managed to keep up with the quality of the original and was one of the highest Malayalam films of the year 2001.

Lal Jose

The prolific Mollywood filmmaker Lal Jose made his directorial debut with the Mammootty starrer film ‘Oru Maravathoor Kanavu’ and is undoubtedly one of the best films of the ace director. The script of the film was written by the veteran writer-actor Sreenivasan and Mammootty played the role of Chandy in ‘Oru Maravathoor Kanavu’. The acting and comedy skills of Mammootty were perfectly captured by the director Lal Jose coupled with an excellent storyline.
