Prithviraj Sukumaran on SS Rajamouli's 'Varanasi': ‘For all the grand visuals and the sheer scale and imagination…’

Prithviraj Sukumaran, who has roped in as one of the central characters in SS Rajamouli’s ‘Varanasi’, has now opened up about what the film has to offer. Expected to be the next big thing from Indian cinema, ‘Varanasi’ has Priyanka Chopra, Mahesh Babu, and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead roles.

Teaming up with SS Rajamouli is any actor’s dream, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is also a filmmaker, talked about working with the legend for ‘Varanasi’. "One thing I've noticed with Rajamouli Sir is that for all the grand visuals and the sheer scale and imagination that his films carry, I've realized that, as far as possible, he sticks to the most simple basics for his filmmaking. I've seldom seen him setting up a gimmick shot. In fact, never. I've never seen him attempt a gimmick with the camera or an unnecessarily complicated track movement. Nothing. For him, it's about the basics. It's about classical filmmaking done right,” Prithviraj Sukumaran told Collider.

Prithviraj Sukumaran has roped in to play the role of Kumbha in the film. The makers earlier dropped a character poster of him in a wheelchair with artificial arms. Talking to the outlet, he added that the wheelchair is ‘an extension’ of Kumbha’s personality.

“The wheelchair, in a way, is an extension of how his mind works, and he's a dangerous man. He's a very dangerous man who's just physically incapacitated. His mind works in very, very unpredictable, dangerous ways. The wheelchair is set up in a way where it almost connects directly to his thoughts. He added, “The wheelchair is not just a prop. It is very much an extension of who Kumbha is.”

‘Varanasi’ is said to be made on a massive budget. The movie buffs are expecting grandeur, as it comes from the ‘Baahubali’ director. The film is set for release in 2027.
