#Rewind 2021: Best villains of Mollywood

A movie villain is someone who adds depth to a storyline or even makes a hero walk through a path of hardships and redeem himself. In a way, a good movie villain is the backbone of any story. In the world cinema or even in Malayalam cinema there has been a rising trend among filmmakers where they have put a real emphasis on a character study of a villain in films. Much importance is given to villain characters. Here let’s look at some of the best Malayalam movie villain characters of the year 2021.

Operation Java

Sometimes it’s not necessary to have a lengthy villain role for terrifying the audience and the best example for that would be the villain character played by the actor Sarath Thenumoola in the superhit film ‘Operation Java’. With only fewer dialogues and small screen time, Sarath Thenumoola really nails his villain character. Anyone who has watched the movie ‘Operation Java’ wouldn’t forget this ‘Michael Pascal’ character played by the Malayali actor Sarath Thenumoola.

Malik

There are certain types of movie characters who start off as a good buddy to the hero but at the last moment, he turns the card against him and proves to be the real villain of the story. The character ‘P. A Aboobacker’ played by Dileesh Pothan in the Fahadh Faasil starrer movie ‘Malik’ is such a character who turns against the hero at the last point. Dileesh Pothan’s character in the movie can also be termed as one of the most hateable characters in Malayalam cinema last year.

Kuruthi- Umar character

A villain becomes more terrifying when fewer details about him are revealed to the audience. A sense of fear generates among the audience when the character ‘Umar’ first shows his appearance in the Prithviraj starrer movie ‘Kuruthi’. ‘Umar’ keeps mum throughout the film and it’s through his gestures and attitudes that he creates a sense of terror among the audience.

Kurup- Bhasi Pillai

Actor Shine Tom Chacko has the knack to transform into any kind of role that a film demands. In the Dulquer Salmaan starrer film ‘Kurup’, Shine Tom Chacko plays a negative shade character named ‘Bhasi Pillai’ and he gives a magnificent performance as a buddy to the real villain ‘Sukumara Kurup’

Nayattu- Biju

The character ‘Biju’ or popularly known among the audience as ‘Kalippan Biju’ has only a small amount of screen time in the film but the way the actor Dineesh P executed the role realistically is much praiseworthy. When the movie ‘Nayattu’ was released people actually noted this negative shaded character ‘Biju’ and the actor Dineesh P. got much appreciation from the audience.

Kuruthi- Laiq

Before the release of the film ‘Kuruthi’ no one was expecting that actor Prithviraj Sukumaran would be playing an antagonist character in the film. And up until the moment the character ‘Laiq’ played by Prithviraj till the end, he really manages to terrify the audience with his stunning performance. The character ‘Laiq’ could be termed as a unique antagonist character played by the talented actor Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Kurup- Sukumara Kurup

‘Kurup’, the movie based on the real-life most-wanted criminal ‘Sukumara Kurup’ got many positive responses from the audience and the lead antagonist character was played by Dulquer Salmaan. He played the character so brilliantly and throughout the film, he really manages to keep a balance between his stardom and villainish attitude. The director Srinath Rajendran’s effort is praiseworthy as he executed a real-life story without sacrificing the commercial elements in the film.

Anyone who has watched the action thriller film ‘Kala’ would never forget the antagonist character essayed by the actor Sumesh Moor. Even though actor Tovino Thomas was the protagonist of the movie, Sumesh Moor really scored a level higher than him and really stunned the audience with his debut acting performance.

Director Dileesh Pothan and the writer Syam Pushakaran gave much space for the talented actor Fahadh Fassil to perform as the negative shade titular character ‘Joji’ and nonetheless to say Fahadh just nailed the role. It could be said that the antagonist character ‘Joji’ could be only essayed by a versatile actor like Fahadh Faasil.

Minnal Murali

The recently released superhero movie ‘Minnal Murali’ starring Tovino Thomas has one of the best Villain characters essayed by the actor Guru Somasundaram. He plays an antagonist role named ‘Shibu’ in the movie and with his outstanding performance, he became one of the best characters in the movie directed by Basil Joseph. Although the film ‘Minnal Murali’ is getting many positive responses, the antagonist character played by Guru Somasundaram’ literally stole the spotlight.
