When an injury during ‘Manjil Virinja Pookkal’ landed Mohanlal in hospital: 'Felt sad to eat bun on Onam'
Long before becoming one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated stars, Mohanlal had a debut story filled with unexpected hurdles, emotional moments, and even a sense of betrayal from close friends. His journey during ‘Manjil Virinja Pookkal’ remains one of the most talked-about throwbacks from Malayalam cinema. Directed by Fazil, ‘Manjil Virinja Pookkal’ released in 1980 and went on to become a major success despite featuring relatively new faces. While Shankar and Poornima Bhagyaraj played the leads, a young Mohanlal made his entry as the antagonist. Mounted on a modest budget, the film struck a chord with audiences and turned into a blockbuster, setting the stage for Mohanlal’s long and illustrious career. What many may not realise is that Mohanlal’s debut wasn’t physically easy. During the shoot of ‘Manjil Virinja Pookkal’, he met with an accident that left him with a fractured leg. Instead of halting production, the makers chose to adapt.Scenes showing his character Narendran with a cast and walking stick were not scripted initially. The injury was real, and the narrative was tweaked to incorporate it seamlessly, adding an unplanned layer of realism to the film.
Mohanlal's Onam spent in hospitalThe injury led to Mohanlal being admitted to a hospital in Madras, forcing him to spend Onam away from home. Recalling the experience, he once shared with a chat show JB Junction, “During the Onam season of ‘Manjil Virinja Pookkal’s production, I was in the hospital with a fractured leg after I accidentally rammed a motorcycle into the unit’s vehicle.”He further shared his disappointment over the situation. “My friends, who left for lunch, promising me that they would return with food for me, didn’t come back for a long time. They eventually returned with just buns. Though I don’t mind eating buns every other day, I felt a bit sad having to eat just that on the occasion of Onam.”When Mohanlal ‘cursed’ his closest friendsIn another candid recollection, Mohanlal revealed that the friends who left him waiting were none other than Priyadarshan and Suresh Kumar, both of whom later became prominent names in the industry. Opening up about that moment, he said, “Already, I was sad over being hospitalised on Thiruvonam day, not being able to spend it with my parents. So, I was upset with them for not returning, despite their promise. And I cursed them; only because I have such freedom with the two even now.” Despite the temporary frustration, their friendship stood the test of time, evolving into one of the most enduring bonds in the industry. Mohanlal's debut that defined a legendLooking back, ‘Manjil Virinja Pookkal’ did more than just introduce Mohanlal. It marked the beginning of a career that would span decades and redefine acting standards across industries. From an injured debutant spending a lonely festival in a hospital to becoming a cinematic icon, his journey remains nothing short of extraordinary.
