Legal action against writer PL Deshpande's relatives
The controversy over the rights of popular writer PL Deshpande's story 'Mhais' witnessed another turn recently when the court approved filmmaker Shekhar Nayeek's application of adding PL Deshpande's relatives Shrdhanand Thakur and Jayant Deshpande as opponents in the case.
In February 2012, Nayeek had filed a case against Dnyanesh Govekar and Devdatt Kapadiya, the producers of the films 'Chandi' and 'Golaberij' over the issue of rights of making a movie based on Deshpande's story 'Mhais' from the book 'Golaberij'.

Nayeek claimed that only he had the right to make the film under a written agreement with Deshpande's wife Sunita. Deshpande's relatives, Shrdhanand Thakur and Jayant Deshpande gave a no objection certificate to Kapadiya and Govekar for their films and hence Nayeek filed a case.
Kapadiya backed out of the case but Govekar got the permission to release his film 'Chandi' last year. Nayeek's 'Mhais' was also released in Pune last year. Speaking on the issue Nayeek said, "It is no longer an issue about PL Deshpande's book 'Golaberij' or the story 'Mhais'. The court has to decide whether PL Deshpande's literature is open to all as claimed by his relatives. The decision is important not just for the film's producers but also for publishers of the book."
