Veera Kambala Movie Review: Where Heritage Shines but the Narrative Stumbles

The narrative introduces Shobharaj, a figure deeply entangled in illegal betting, narcotics, beef export rackets, and political alliances. His influence stretches across borders, with Tulunadu’s traditional Kambala buffalo race gradually being drawn into the gambling circuit. At the same time, Sathya (Adithya) is positioned as someone attempting to dismantle these corrupt systems, though his larger-than-life entry and stylized action sequences create a tonal disconnect from the cultural subject the film later explores. The story then shifts to Moodbidri, grounding itself in a more rooted setting. Deepu (Gopinath Bhat), honouring his mother’s wish, decides to revive the Manjotti Guttu Kambala after a 68-year halt caused by longstanding hostility between the Manjotti Guttu and Mittabailu Mahabala families. The announcement generates anticipation among locals, but the revival quickly becomes entangled in political rivalry. Various parties attempt to use the event for visibility, while opposition forces push to block it by involving animal rights activism, leading to legal intervention. A significant portion of the film unfolds through a courtroom battle between Prakash Raj and Ravi Shankar, debating the legitimacy of restarting the event after a stay order is imposed. Parallel to this legal conflict, the narrative documents the preparation behind Kambala — the selection of buffaloes, their training routines, the competitive formation of racing teams, and the effort families invest in maintaining the animals. These segments provide insight into the discipline, pride, and generational continuity associated with the sport. The film also portrays the obstacles faced by the organisers: sabotage at training grounds, deliberate disruptions in paddy fields, and even the kidnapping of a race buffalo. The mounting challenges test the family’s determination to see the event through. The tension surrounding whether Manjotti Guttu can successfully conduct Kambala becomes the central thread that drives the latter half. Performance-wise, Naveen Padil appears as an injured former racer attempting to mentor new talent, adding emotional weight to the sporting angle. Bhojaraj Vamanjur contributes lighter moments, while appearances by Prakash Raj, Ravi Shankar, and Radhika Narayan support the narrative at crucial points. Technically, the film adopts a conventional style. The staging and dramatic structuring feel reminiscent of older political dramas, particularly in its portrayal of rivalries and confrontations. The Dubai portion and exaggerated action sequences create a contrast with the more grounded depiction of rural preparation and legal struggle, leading to uneven pacing. Where the film finds strength is in its depiction of Kambala’s cultural significance and the collective effort required to sustain it. The behind-the-scenes portrayal of training, care, and community involvement forms the most coherent aspect of the narrative. Outside of these segments, the broader political and crime elements lean toward familiar dramatic patterns without adding substantial depth.
