‘Carmeni Selvam’ explores debt’s impact on dreams, director Ram Chakri highlights personal sacrifices and life choices
Director Ram Chakri's upcoming film, Carmeni Selvam, releasing April 3, delves into the personal sacrifices made after marriage and the trade-off between financial security and lost dreams. The narrative, shaped by observing how debt consumes time, evolved organically. Actor Samuthirakani's timely response proved a turning point, with Gautham Vasudev Menon also contributing significantly to the project.
For director Ram Chakri, 'Carmeni Selvam' is not just a story, but a reflection of questions that stayed with him over time. The film, set to release on April 3, emerges from a deeply personal space. “After marriage, I realised there comes a point where one has to make a sacrifice,” he says, explaining how the shift from personal dreams to responsibilities became the starting point of the narrative. The idea of this film grew from observing how people often trade time for financial security. “When you are in debt, what you lose is not actually money, you lose your time and what you truly wanted to do,” he shares, adding that this internal conflict shaped the film’s core. From there, the story evolved organically as he began building characters around these thoughts.

Ram’s journey into filmmaking has been one of persistence. He spent years writing, revising and pitching the script, navigating uncertainty along the way. “You will always have doubts about whether somebody will read it or not.” The turning point came when the script reached actor Samuthirakani, who responded within days, he admits. It took nearly two years before the project came together, Along the way, collaborations added new layers including working with Gautham Vasudev Menon, whose presence, he says, has a distinct influence in the film. Despite logistical challenges like shooting abroad and executing crucial scenes within limited time, the director stayed focused on the story’s emotional core. “I wanted to find answers to these questions from different perspectives,” he says.
