From Marudhanayagam to Sabaash Naidu and Marmayogi: Kamal Haasan's 4 most ambitious yet dropped films

Kamal Haasan, a name synonymous with versatility and cinematic brilliance, has never shied away from pushing the boundaries of Indian cinema. While his filmography boasts numerous groundbreaking works, several of his ambitious projects were shelved due to financial constraints, creative differences, or political roadblocks. Here's a look at four high-profile Kamal Haasan films that were dropped despite creating massive buzz.

2/5

Marudhanayagam

Undoubtedly, the most talked-about of Kamal Haasan’s unrealised ventures, Marudhanayagam was a period epic based on the life of a freedom fighter. The film made global headlines in 1997 when it was launched with none other than Queen Elizabeth II present at the event. Kamal had invested years of research and began production with grand battle sequences. However, the film was eventually shelved due to escalating production costs and a lack of consistent funding. Even today, fans hope for its revival.

3/5

Sabaash Naidu

A spin-off of his popular character Balram Naidu from Dasavathaaram, Sabaash Naidu was envisioned as a spy comedy featuring Kamal Haasan alongside his daughter Shruti Haasan and comedian Brahmanandam. The project was launched with much fanfare in 2016 but faced multiple halts due to directorial changes, financial troubles, and Kamal's political commitments. Despite some portions being shot, the film remains incomplete.

4/5

Marmayogi

Another historical fantasy project, Marmayogi, was to be an epic saga set in ancient India. The film was supposed to feature Kamal in a powerful dual role, and even Bollywood actors like Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan were rumoured to be part of the ensemble. Planned as a pan-Indian release, Marmayogi was shelved before it could go on floors, reportedly due to budgetary issues and a lack of producers willing to take the financial risk.

5/5

Thalaivan Irukkiran

Billed as a political thriller, Thalaivan Irukkiran was another ambitious film Kamal Haasan announced in the early 2000s. The actor described it as a deeply philosophical and socially relevant story. Despite multiple announcements over the years, including a revival plan under his production house Raaj Kamal Films International, the project never took off beyond pre-production.
