Ilaiyaraaja’s fight for copyrights: A look at his recent legal claims

Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, known for his iconic contributions to the Tamil music industry, has been actively involved in several legal disputes over the years to safeguard his musical rights. From unauthorized usage of his tracks in films to challenging music companies over digital rights, Ilaiyaraaja’s stance on copyright protection is unwavering. His legal actions not only highlight his commitment to preserving his legacy but also raise crucial questions about the evolving landscape of music rights in the digital era. Here are some notable recent instances where the maestro took legal action to protect his work.

'Good Bad Ugly' (2025)

Ilaiyaraaja sent a legal notice to the makers of Ajith's 'Good Bad Ugly', accusing them of unauthorized use of his iconic compositions 'Otha Rooba Tharen,' 'Ilamai Idho Idho,' and 'En Jodi Manja Kuruvi.' The veteran composer emphasized that these songs, which are trademarks of his musical genius, were used in the film without his permission. Asserting his rights under the Copyright Act, Ilaiyaraaja demanded a compensation of Rs 5 crore and an unconditional apology from the makers. The legal action highlights his firm stance on protecting his legacy and intellectual property in the entertainment industry.

'Coolie' (2024)

In 2024, Ilaiyaraaja took legal action against the producers of 'Coolie' for featuring his famous track 'Va Va Pakkam Va' from 'Thanga Magan' in the film’s teaser without obtaining proper authorization. The composer called this infringement an offense under the Copyright Act of 1957, requesting either the official permission for the use of the song or its immediate removal from the teaser. His move reaffirmed his commitment to preserving his music rights and ensuring that his compositions are used lawfully, underlining the importance of adhering to copyright regulations in the film industry.

'Manjummel Boys' (2024)

Ilaiyaraaja raised a copyright dispute against the Malayalam film 'Manjummel Boys', which used his popular song 'Kanmani Anbodu Kaadhalan' without securing prior consent. The composer issued a legal notice demanding Rs 2 crore in compensation for the unauthorized use, citing copyright infringement. Although the matter was eventually settled for a reported Rs 60 lakh, this case added to a series of copyright-related actions taken by Ilaiyaraaja in recent years. His firm stance on such issues further strengthened his position as an advocate for music rights and artists' protection in the industry.

SPB's World Tour (2017)

Back in 2017, Ilaiyaraaja sent a series of legal notices to legendary singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, his son S. P. Charan, and singer Chithra, who were preparing for a world tour. The notices prohibited them from performing his compositions without his explicit consent. Ilaiyaraaja warned that legal action would follow if the performances went ahead without authorization. This move was particularly significant as it underscored his demand for royalties for the public performance of his music, even when it involved a beloved figure like SPB. The controversy drew attention to the complexities of music rights and the legalities surrounding live performances.
