'Pushpa' to 'Leo': How character-based titles became Indian cinema’s biggest success formula before 'Raaka'

Atlee and Allu Arjun's 'Raaka' has already created buzz with its powerful title. Reports suggest the makers intentionally chose the name by following a successful formula used in films like Pushpa: The Rise, where the hero’s name itself became the identity of the movie. Over the years, many blockbuster films have used the lead character’s name as the title, helping audiences connect instantly with the hero. These movies range from mass action flicks to romantic tales, and their names have been etched into the memories of their fan following. Here is a look at some popular films where the character name itself became the movie’s biggest brand.

2/6

'Pushpa'

Allu Arjun played the role of Pushparaj in Sukumar’s 'Pushpa' series. The rough appearance, dialogues, gestures, slang, and mannerisms of the hero became extremely popular throughout India. Dialogues such as "Thaggede Le" made the movie viral among youngsters through social media platforms. As soon as the movie was released, fans began referring to Allu Arjun himself as 'Pushpa.'

3/6

'Jailer'

In 'Jailer,' directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Rajinikanth portrayed the character of Jailer Muthuvel Pandian. Even though the title was simple, the character became the soul of the film. Fans celebrated every scene featuring Rajinikanth’s powerful screen presence. The movie became a massive blockbuster and strengthened the trend further.

4/6

'Petta'

Rajinikanth’s character in 'Petta' was called Petta Velan. The title itself carried style, mystery, and mass energy from the beginning. Director Karthik Subbaraj presented the character in a fan-favourite manner. Even today, many fans remember the movie mainly because of the character’s swag.

5/6

'Leo'

Thalapathy Vijay played Leo Das in 'Leo,' which Lokesh Kanagaraj directed. The title created curiosity even before the movie’s release in theatres. As the story progressed, the name Leo Das became a major highlight of the film. The character name was extensively used by fans on social networking sites and fan functions.

'Baahubali'

The Prabhas-starrer 'Baahubali' is one of the most legendary characters in Indian cinema. The mere mention of the film’s title conjures up an almost mythical figure amongst international cinema audiences. Both parts of the movie directed by S.S. Rajamouli have cemented their place in cinema history. Films such as 'Raaka' are now following suit.
