Director R. J. Balaji has opened up about the journey of 'Karuppu,' starring Suriya. He explained that the project started unexpectedly when he received a call from the 'Karuppu' makers while working on another script. He described the second call as something that felt very special and meaningful, almost like a strong instinct to take it forward. Soon after, he met
Suriya and narrated the story. The actor liked the script for its strong mix of emotion, action, and commercial appeal, eventually giving his full support to the film.
AR Rahman's exit from 'Karuppu' explained
Speaking about the music in an interview with Cinema Vikatan,
RJ Balaji revealed that A. R. Rahman was initially supposed to compose for the film. He shared, “After ‘Mookuthi Amman’, I met AR Rahman sir, and he himself asked if we could collaborate. I was very happy and narrated the story of ''Karuppu'’.” Rahman liked the script and even had multiple discussions with the team. However, things changed later due to personal reasons. “He told me, ‘I am not sure if I can do justice to this film now. Your shooting has also started. What can we do?” Balaji said. Though disappointed, the team had to move forward with a replacement.
Sai Abhyankkar roped in as the team looks for fresh musical energy
After AR Rahman’s exit, the makers quickly brought in Sai Abhyankkar as the new composer on board. RJ Balaji explained that the team needed songs immediately as the shoot had already started. They were impressed by Sai’s previous work and believed his fresh style would suit the film. He also expressed confidence in the young composer, saying that just like legends such as Ilaiyaraaja and later Anirudh Ravichander rose to great heights, Sai too has the potential to achieve great success in the industry.
‘Karuppu’ promises a complete family entertainer with a strong message
RJ Balaji also spoke about the film’s overall tone, describing 'Karuppu' as a complete family entertainer with action, emotion, romance, and social responsibility. He said the film avoids portraying women negatively and aims to deliver a meaningful message. Moreover, the movie has Suriya and Trisha coming together after a long time. According to the director, the film will bring back Suriya’s energetic and emotional screen presence, offering fans a memorable theatrical experience.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the
