'Suryavamsam' to 'Singam' - five Tamil films that were remade in Bollywood

Bollywood has been recreating many movies inspired by films made in other industries since decades. Similarly, some of the most popular Tamil movies have been remade in Bollywood and done wonders at the box office. This adaptation of regional as well as Hollywood movies by Bollywood has resulting in the creating of some of the most iconic films in the history of Indian cinema. Here, we will have a look at five of the biggest movies of Bollywood that were remade from Tamil movies. From 'Suryavamsam' to 'Singam', here are the films.

2/6

'Suryavamsam'(Tamil) - 'Sooryavansham'(Hindi)

The 1999 Bollywood family-drama features Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role, that of Thakur Bhanu Pratap Singh, a reputed village Sarpanch and his youngest son Heera, who is illiterate but a good human being. This Hindi remake is an adaptation of the 1997 Tamil film directed by Vikraman starring Sarath Kumar in the lead role. The roles that Amitabh played in 'Sooryavansham' were represented by Sarath Kumar in 'Suryavamsam'.

3/6

'Thevar Magan'(Tamil) - 'Virasat'(Hindi)

'Virasat' starring Anil Kapoor, Tabu and Pooja Batra is considered to be a classic and is recogni’sed not only for its soulful songs but also for the social message it gives – that education is a tool for empowering people. The film is a remake of director Bharatan’s 1992 Tamil film 'Thevar Magan' starring Ulaganayagan Kamal Hassan, Sivaji Ganesan, Revathi, and Gouthami. It has also been remade in Kannada as 'Thandege Thakka Maga', and dubbed in Telugu as 'Kshatriya Putrudu'.

4/6

'Run'(Tamil) - 'Run'(Hindi)

The 2002 Tamil film 'Run' has R. Madhavan, Meera Jasmine and Raghuvaran in the lead roles. The film received positive reviews from critics and was a successful one at the box office, which is what prompted the Bollywood remake and a Telugu dubbed version. 'Run' Hindi version was made in the same name and it stars Vijay Raaz, Abhishek Bachchan, and Bhumika Chawla in the lead roles. The film is directed by the popular cinematographer Jeeva and is best known for the parody scenes. However, the remake version of the Tamil blockbuster film failed to do well at the box office.

5/6

'Mudhalvan'(Tamil) - 'Nayak'(Hindi)

'Mudhalvan', a political thriller is directed by Shankar and the film starred Arjun, Manisha Koirala, and Raghuvaran in the lead roles. This film is a critically acclaimed film that enjoyed a strong fan-base during the time of its release. While the Hindi version 'Nayak', features Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, and Ambrish Puri in lead roles, Shankar had initially roped in Arjun for the lead role for its original version after Rajinikanth refused to act in the film.

6/6

'Singam'(Tamil) - 'Singham'(Hindi)

The cop-action drama starring Suriya as the lead turned into the biggest hit of the star and the film was remade in Hindi with the same title. The Tamil version is directed by Hari, while the Hindi version of the movie is directed by Rohit Shetty. The Hindi version stars Ajay Devgn, Kajal Aggarwal, and Prakash Raj in prominent roles.
