Tamil Nadu awards announcement: Pa. Ranjith questions CREDIBILITY, asks, 'Do they truly function with honesty?'
As the State Film Awards by the Tamil Nadu government are declared, filmmaker Pa. Ranjith wonders if these and other private-award bodies are indeed “honest.” His post on social media platform X has set off a storm, not to mention his comments about “blowing it up.” His remarks go beyond mere criticism – some have called them inflammatory; it is inferred that there is no credibility in award bodies, that they are “not honest.” Of course, as state-awarded winners are considered symbols of cultural respect and, of course, pride in society, especially when mired.
Tamil Nadu Government has recently declared the State Film Awards for 2016 – 2022, Television Awards for 2014 – 2020 and the MGR Film and Television Institute Student for the Academic Years 2015-16 to 2021-2022. As per the official announcement, the awards would be presented at the event to be held at Chennai’s Kalaivanar Arangam, where the Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will present the awards. The winners categories include names of artists, movies, artists, series and technical teams. The award will be presented together with cash prizes, gold medals, mementoes, and achievement certificates.
Among the prizes announced, it was Pa. Ranjith who asked, “Do the government and private award-giving bodies of Tamil Nadu and India really operate in a clean manner?” It raises the issue of selection committees and juries and perhaps even political affiliations. This isn’t an individual view, but rather the general sentiment in the industry regarding the trustworthiness of these awards.
Pa. Ranjith's post has triggered an even wider discussion on the adequacy of awards. Awards are to appreciate the art, is it a fair conclusion? Pro and cons are debating and discussing the need for an award to be accountable.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the latest Hindi movies, upcoming Hindi movies in 2026 , and Telugu movies.”
