'VPKK is undoubtedly the sexiest Tamil film'
Aftera five-year battle with the regional censor board in Chennai, veteran producerand director Velu Prabhakaran finally managed to get his controversial filmVelu Prabhakaranin Kathal Kathai(VPKK) released lastweek.
The film, with an A certificate due to itssteamy scenes including frontal nudity, titillating glimpses of the femaleanatomy and crude lip locks, opened well all over Tamil Nadu due to thecuriosity factor.

Says veteran journalist and chronicler of Tamilcinema for the last 50 years Film News Anandan, VPKK is undoubtedly thesexiest Tamil film I have ever seen. It is a soft porn film and I wonder how itgot through the censors with an A certificate? It really deservesan XX certificate, if there is one!
An official in the censorboard says that the film, after going through various committees which have cutvast portions, was issued an A certificate as denying it acertificate would amount to violating Velu Prabhakarans right to freedomof expression.
According to its producer Velu Prabhakaran,The film was earlier titled Kathal Kathai and has a message thatsex and lust are responsible for 80 percent of the crimes committed in oursociety. It was five years in the film box as originally, the censors had bannedthe film. Later, I went to a revising committee who asked me to re-shoot andchange the story. So, the entire film was re-shot and the film from a thirdpersons view became my personal story. Hence, the sub-text VeluPrabhakaranin was added to the title.

The film, which isscreechy and hysterical with sexual scenes thrust into the narration, uses theage old trick of flashback scenes to provide the sleaze. Somewheredown the line, the camera becomes voyeuristic and the horror ofatrocities on women the theme of the film farcical. Asks Anandan, Im sure Velu Prabhakaran is mature enoughto know the difference between exploitation and cause-orientation. Obviously, the film has been made to pander to the base sense of ouraudiences.
The film, made on a cost of around Rs 1.35 croreincluding prints and posters without any television and hardly any print mediapublicity, opened in 66 screens across TN. The film took a decent opening andhas been declared a hit by the trade and is expected to do business anywherebetween Rs 4 and 5 crore, mainly from small centres.
