Happy Birthday Varalaxmi Sarathkumar: Jaw-dropping poses of the South bombshell

Despite hailing from a celebrity background, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar did not intend to settle down as a run-of-the-mill heroine. Instead, she chose the hard way and proved herself as a complete actress with impressive performances in all four languages of South cinema. 2021 has been a breakthrough year for the 36-year-old diva in Tollywood as two of her films worked wonders at the box-office. In Ravi Teja’s Krack, she played the antagonist’s role of Jayamma, a film buff who watches all new releases in theaters. In the recently released ‘Naandhi’, she delivered a commendable act as criminal lawyer Aadhya and bagged accolades from all quarters.

Trained actor and beauty with brains

Varalaxmi is born to popular Kollywood actor Sarathkumar and Chaya in Chennai. Veteran heroine Raadhika is her stepmother. Upon completion of her Graduation in Microbiology, the ‘Sarkar’ actress moved to Scotland to pursue her Master’s in Business Management from a noted university. After wrapping up her education, she joined Anupam Kher’s School in Mumbai to hone her acting skills before stepping foot into the showbiz world. Besides playing the leading lady, Varalaxmi’s goal is to explore different kind of roles as an actress.

Successful debut opposite Simbu in Podaa Podi (2012)

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar portrayed the role of a London-based dancer in her debut film Podaa Podi. Though the romantic-comedy spent four years in the making, she bagged brownie points from critics for her solid emoting skills, arresting screen-presence and dancing talent. Terming her as a “scene-stealer”, a reviewer mentioned that ‘she rattles off her dialogues with such spontaneity and charm that she wins you over right away.’ Soon after, she starred in Sundar C's ‘Madha Gaja Raja’ alongside Vishal, but the film remained unreleased owing to financial troubles.

Delivered the performance of a lifetime in Bala’s Tharai Thappattai

Bala and his 2016 directorial ‘Tharai Thappattai’ managed to extract the acting brilliance in Varalaxmi. As a bold, aggressive and alcohol-guzzling Sooravali, the actress delivered the performance of a lifetime and pushed the viewers into tears. This applaud-worthy act also earned her the big opportunity to star alongside Mammootty in her maiden Malayalam flick ‘Kasaba’. She essayed the tough role of an attractive brothel-keeper with ease and proved herself as a complete actress. Her debut film in Kannada ‘Maanikya’ opposite Sudeep went on to shatter many records at the box-office.

From heroine to antagonist, Varalaxmi made a point

After a roller-coaster ride as a heroine, Varalaxmi stepped into the shoes of an antagonist in ‘Pandem Kodi 2’ opposite Vishal. She convincingly played the role of Pechchi who vouched to avenge her husband’s death by killing the last surviving man in the opponent group. In Vijay’s Sarkar, she delivered a flawless performance as the mighty politician Komalavalli who even kills her own father for power. In the 2021 blockbuster Krack, she played the negative role of Jayamma.

Tollywood journey

In 2019, Varalaxmi stepped foot into Telugu cinema with Sundeep Kishan’s Tenali Ramakrishna BA.BL and played the role of an aspiring politician and industrialist. Though the courtroom-drama tanked at the ticket counters, she staged a successful comeback with the back-to-back hits of Krack and Naandhi. Speculations are rife that she is being considered for a crucial role in Allu Arjun’s Pushpa starring Rashmika Mandanna as the leading lady.
