Did you also get fooled by the viral 'war lockdown PDF' on April Fools' Day? What is it and how to spot it?
The volatile geopolitical situation amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict has people on the edge of their seats, expecting the unexpected.
Amid this, people received a viral message coinciding with April Fools’ Day, marked on 1st April every year.
WhatsApp and Telegram groups in India have been flooded with a scary-sounding announcement that the government is imposing a nationwide “war lockdown” because of the Iran-linked conflict in West Asia.
A viral message shared on April 1, 2026, claims that India is going under a complete lockdown similar to the 2020-style Covid restrictions, triggering panic among families who still remember the trauma of that time.
No announcement of any such “war lockdown” has been made by the Government of India, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Prime Minister’s Office, or any state government.
The timing of the message played a big role in its spread. The phrase “Lockdown in India 2026” shot up on Google Trends after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address in Parliament, where he compared the current West Asia crisis to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and asked citizens to stay prepared and united.
Some people misread or misquoted his “Team India” language as a hint of another lockdown. That misunderstanding was packaged into rumours, and taking advantage of the occasion, this hoax has now been turned into a viral “war lockdown PDF” circulating on WhatsApp and Telegram.
Even though the “war lockdown” rumour is fake, the government is treating the Iran-linked conflict seriously. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said the government is focused on protecting energy security and economic stability, not on shutting down the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has chaired a high-level meeting with Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors to discuss how India can manage the fallout from disruptions in global energy and trade flows.
Given how easily these hoaxes spread, authorities and fact-checkers are urging people to rely only on official sources such as government websites, verified ministry handles on X, and trusted news outlets.
PIB has repeatedly warned that forwarded audio clips, PDFs, or screenshot messages claiming sudden lockdowns or service shutdowns are almost always fake.
So, before forwarding or acting on any “war lockdown” or emergency-type message, check whether a reputed news outlet or an official government account has posted the same alert. In this case, the “war lockdown” message is a textbook example of how misinformation can exploit genuine anxiety - and why verifying before sharing matters more than ever.
