Most unusual wild animals in Israel

From the arid deserts of the Negev to the lush forests of Galilee, Israel is home to a variety of unusual wild animals that thrive in its diverse ecosystems. Located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, this influences the biodiversity of the nation. Israel’s rich culture and history often steal the spotlight and much of the world’s focus. However, the rich wildlife of Israel is a story of resilience and adaptability. In this article, we will explore ten of the most unusual wild animals that call Israel home, offering a glimpse into the fascinating and often overlooked natural wonders of the region.

2/11

Lesser Egyptian jerboa (Jaculus jaculus)

The Jerboa is a small rodent found in Africa and the Middle East. While they resemble a kangaroo in locomotion and posture, Lesser Egyptian jerboas are the tiniest species in the genus Jaculus. They are solitary, nocturnal creatures with incredible senses of smell, sight, and hearing.

3/11

Syrian spadefoot toad (Pelobates syriacus)

The Syrian spadefoot toad is a plump toad with a large, flat-topped skull and bulging eyes. It can be found in light woodland, bushy areas, and semi-desert regions. These are nocturnal animals, with some even opting to hibernate during summer.

4/11

Marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna)

These small mammals are found in the drier areas and grasslands of southeastern Europe to western China. Like skunks, these animals emit a strong-smelling secretion from anal sacs under their tails when threatened. These creatures never stay in the same place twice, making their population count difficult.

5/11

Caracal (Caracal caracal)

These unique wild cats live on rocky hills or grasslands in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. These solitary animals are most active after sunset, when they hunt birds, rodents, rabbits, and gazelles. Their unique ears make them easily recognizable.

6/11

Sand cats (Felis margarita)

Sand cats are mainly found in three areas of the world: the Sahara Desert of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of Central Asia. These species occur in very arid, dry habitats. They are the smallest among the wild cats and hunt during the night. They have developed heightened senses for hunting prey in dim light.

7/11

Near Eastern fire salamanders (Salamandra infraimmaculata)

Near Eastern fire salamanders are mainly found in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. The black bodies of these salamanders feature bright yellow spots on their backs. They are poisonous creatures, and their venom glands are present on the back of their necks. In Israel, they are listed as "Endangered" and are protected by national laws.

8/11

Hula painted frogs

Hula painted frogs are native to Israel and are widely known for their fossils spanning from the Oligocene through the Pleistocene. The Hula painted frog was believed to be extinct due to habitat destruction in the 1950s, but the species was rediscovered in 2011. These creatures have a dark belly with small white spots.

9/11

Palestine mountain gazelle (Gazella gazella)

Native to Israel and the Palestinian Territories, these gazelles inhabit regions from the Golan Heights through Central Israel, as well as parts of Jordan and Turkey. They are diurnal, social, and highly territorial, forming close-knit groups to defend their territories fiercely.

10/11

Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr)

These leopards are on the verge of extinction, making them extremely rare to see. They are native to the Arabian Peninsula, and their fur varies from pale yellow to deep golden, tawny, or grey. Arabian leopards are mostly nocturnal, preferring to hunt at night, but they can sometimes be seen in daylight.

11/11

Blind scorpion (Akrav israchanani)

First discovered dead in 2006 in Ayalon Cave in Israel, there have been no signs of the blind scorpion existing today. The only discovered creature of its kind was an eyeless, brown, troglobitic scorpion about 50 mm in length.
