Scared of getting rich? Or being watched by a duck? These 5 weird phobias really exist

Phobias are intense, and mostly irrational fears of specific objects, situations, or creatures. While many of us are familiar with common fears like spiders or heights, some phobias are surprisingly strange and lesser-known. These unusual fears are humorous to those who don’t suffer from them. Yet those who are affected can get real anxiety and discomfort from them.

Here are five of the strangest phobias that might surprise you

2/6

Plutophobia

Plutophobia is the unusual fear of wealth or becoming wealthy. People with this phobia may feel anxiety or guilt at the thought of having too much money, worrying it could change them or create problems. This fear can come up from concerns about responsibility, losing friends, or attracting negative attention. While it sounds odd, plutophobia shows how fears can extend beyond physical dangers and can go as far as complex social and psychological issues involving money and success.

3/6

Anatidaephobia

Anatidaephobia is a bizarre and very specific fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is constantly watching you. Though it sounds funny, those with this phobia experience genuine paranoia and discomfort when they see a duck and believe that it might be observing their every move. This fear likely moves into a broader sense of being watched or judged, but it is uniquely fixed on ducks as the observers.

4/6

Phobophobia

Phobophobia is the intense fear of developing a phobia or experiencing fear. This creates a vicious cycle where the anxiety about fear triggers even more fear, making it hard for sufferers to relax or face new situations. People with phobophobia may avoid anything that could cause anxiety, which can significantly limit their lives. This phobia shows how fear can become self-restricting and deeply exhausting.

5/6

Ablutophobia

Ablutophobia is the fear of washing or bathing, often leading to people avoiding regular hygiene practices. It can come up from traumatic experiences or an extreme dislike of water. This phobia can cause serious social and health problems if left untreated. Despite looking to be strange, it’s a recognised condition that affects people differently.

6/6

Nomophobia

Nomophobia is the modern fear of losing access to a mobile phone or mobile signal. As smartphones have become essential for communication and information, this phobia shows how deeply technology is woven into daily life. Those with nomophobia may panic when their phone dies, they lose signal, or forget their device. It’s a contemporary fear born from our digital dependency and need to stay connected at all times.
