Viral: Indian tourists chant "Jai Maharashtra" in Paris; Video sparks social media outrage over civic sense

Traveling abroad often is no less than a dream come true for Indians, and in the far-off lands, it feels like stepping into a spotlight where every action gets magnified.

But sometimes, people forget the fine line between expressing cultural pride and respecting local norms.


Recently, a video has gone viral, from Paris that shows Indian chanting slogans in an invariable loud tone that has raised questions over their lack of civic sense. The video is doing rounds on social media and has turned the comments section into a debate ground!

What exactly happened

A recent video from Paris' bustling Montmartre area captured a group of Indian men beside a street performer, sparking outrage online over their lack of civic sense.
One man draped his arm around the performer and belted out chants like “Jai Maharashtra,” “Jai Shiv Sena,” and “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jai,” with others soon joining in, making the noise even louder. Despite the performer's clear unease gesturing repeatedly to stop, the group carried on for several seconds, as noted by multiple viewers.


The clip was first shared on X by @Delhiite_, who captioned it simply: “A video from Paris shows Indian tourists with a street performer”. It quickly spread across platforms, including Instagram via Shivsenamumbailive, fueling a divide between supporters cheering regional pride and detractors slamming the disruption.

Social media response

Netizens didn't hold back, with one user raging, “Disgusting, these fellows should be deported and banned for life from entering the country”. Another commented, “Misusing other people’s decency to do the most obnoxious things is the characteristic feature of BIMARU nomads,” talking of regional stereotypes. A third added, “In overseas locales, Indians desperately try to break out of their inferiority complex to indulge in acts that defy local customs and manners. For them, it’s a joy to be a misfit wherever they go”.



Other reactions included calls like “We need to learn lot of civic sense if we need to earn respect globally,” emphasising global perceptions. Some said the performer's signals directly, “He's telling them to be Quiet” and “He legit feels uncomfortable bruv”. While a few responded with “Jai Maharashtra” in support, the criticism dominated.

This is not the first incident!

This isn't new; Indian tourists face frequent flak for such lapses, both abroad and at home. Just early this month, a video of shirtless men dancing with alcohol bottles and hookahs in Himachal Pradesh's snowy Lahaul-Spiti region ignited similar fury on social media.
