Who is Namgya C. Khampa? The veteran IFS officer behind India's observer spot in Trump's Board of Peace

India participated in the first meeting of US President Donald Trump's newly formed "Board of Peace" on Thursday. This group, established by Trump, aims to manage the Gaza ceasefire and rebuild the area devastated by the Israel-Hamas conflict.

India has not become a full member and joined only as an observer. It was represented by Namgya Khampa, the Chargé d'Affaires at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, according to PTI reports citing the attendee list. Nearly 50 countries joined, with 27 as formal members; others like India and the EU attended as observers, per the same report.

Who is Namgya C. Khampa?

Namgya C. Khampa was born in 1977 and is a 2000-batch Indian Foreign Service officer who has quietly climbed the ranks over more than two decades, representing India in key global spots from Beijing to New York and beyond.

Currently, she is serving as the Chargé d'Affaires at India's Embassy in Washington, DC. She's steering the ship amid vital U.S.-India ties, especially timely with President Donald Trump's bold moves on world peace.

What does the IFS veteran’s career look like?

Khampa joined the Indian Foreign Service in 2000 and brings over 25 years of expertise, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs. According to NDTV, "Born in 1977, Khampa is a 2000-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). She has over two decades of experience in Indian diplomacy." The Sunday Guardian adds she holds Master's and MPhil degrees in International Relations.

Khampa’s key postings and achievements

Khampa served twice in India's China missions, between 2002-2006 and 2013-2016, building that vital relationship. From 2009-2013, she was at India's UN Mission in New York and was elected to the UN Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) for 2011-2013.

Moneycontrol reports, "She was at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York from 2009 to 2013. During that period, she was elected as a member of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) for the 2011-2013 term."

She later handled the role of Deputy Chief of Mission in Kathmandu, Nepal, then High Commissioner to Kenya, also accredited to Somalia, strengthening bilateral ties and trade.

At MEA headquarters, she managed the U.S., Sri Lanka, and Myanmar desks. From 2016-2018, she was on deputation to the Prime Minister’s Office; and from 2018-2020, she led the Development Partnership Division for neighbour aid.

Trump had unveiled the initiative last month at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying he wanted "everyone to be a part" of the body and hinting it might one day rival the UN. India chose observer status, skipping full membership for now.
